PS3 Games Database

Welcome to the PS3 Attitude Games Database for 2009.

What follows is a comprehensive and constantly updated list of every confirmed game available for the PlayStation 3 in 2009 (and beyond), lovingly crafted and curated by our very own Brodiesan (a real labour of love, we can tell you). Being completists, you’ll also find details of titles that have been seen ‘in the wild’ but not officially announced yet.

If you spot any errors or omissions, feel free to get in touch and let us know what is wrong so we can keep this resource accurate and up-to-date.

Publisher: EA
Developer: EA Canada
Out: February 2009
Source: Press Release

Due for a PSN release in February 2009 for the kingly sum of $9.99, EA promise a “no rules, fast paced, hockey experience that gamers of all types can enjoy.”  There really seems to be an emphasis on the “no rules” aspect of the downloadable game here and reminds us of that old joke: “I once went to a fight and a game of ice-hockey broke out.” Goalie comes out too far from his crease? Crush him. Opponents getting in your way? Check them over the advertisement boards and watch as they skate back on to the ice with broken fingers. We haven’t played a good hockey game since the halcyon SEGA days. Here’s hoping regions other than hockey mad North America see 3 on 3 NHL arcade get a release. If anything we want to punch the over sized head off forty top NHL stars.

50 cent blood on the sand 150x150 PS3 Games Database50 Cent: Blood on the Sand

Publisher: THQ
Developer: Swordfish Studios
Out: Feb 24th 2009
Source: Press release

The start of 2009 sees the sequel to last-gen’s “50 Cent: Bulletproof” hitting like an A-bomb. Stop laughing. The first game was universally panned (but sold well) and its next-gen sequel will see more vehicular combat, a helicopter duel and even more 50 Cent exclusive tracks. Developer Swordfish Studios claim: “We are taking this sequel to the next level with exciting combat and gunplay, new original music, great graphics and a new story.” The game will feature multi-player drop-in/drop-out co-op, “interactive counter-kills, driving” and “aerial combat.” That would be the helicopter duel then.

Publisher: D3 Publications
Developer: TBA
Out: 2009
Source: IGN

What would you do if you had 100 untraceable bullets? 100 lives to snuff out with no repercussions or fear of being caught? Publisher D3 announced plans to make a game of comic creators Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso’s violent and morally suspect tale a couple of years ago however we’re not going to sugar coat it for you – the announcement is gone from their site. We’ve heard other rumblings hinting that it’s still on track for 2009. Hmm. Don’t bet on it.

Developer: MTO
Out: Never. Trust us.

Sometimes we wish studios would just cancel a game so we can stop talking about it. Yokohama based MTO have apparently been working on virtual pet game Active Dogs since the dawn of time. Will it finally see a release in 2009? We somehow doubt it.

africa thumb PS3 Games DatabaseNational Geographic’s Africa

Publisher: SCE / National Geographic
Developer: Rhino studios
Out: 2009
Source: Kotaku

Known as Hakuna Mata in Asia (no, seriously), National Geographic stepped in and decided to publish an English version as “Afrika” for the Western market. Shattering every genre known to man (and beast), Africa sees the player take on the role of a photojournalist on the Dark Continent. Called into action from base camp, players go and photograph certain wild animals in search of good snaps to earn money and ultimately upgrade their gear.  Budding shutterbugs and zoologists are probably falling over their cats to get at this game but, for the rest of us, we’re left scratching our heads. Could be amazing. Or downright weird. The soundtrack won awards by the way. If that’s your bag.

Developer: Namco Bandai
Out: Jan 27th 2009

The cult classic Samuel L. Jackson infused anime hit gets the videogame treatment with the titular weapons-master appearing on January 27th. Namco are handling its development and the game will be the first game published under Namco Bandai’s western label Surge. Expect cel-shading, cool quips and limb loosening. If you’ve not already checked out the anime then we heartily recommend you do so. Now.

aliens cm 150x150 PS3 Games DatabaseAliens: Colonial Marines

Publisher: SEGA
Developer: Gearbox Software
Out: Q1 2009
Source: Press release

Having already delivered such big hitters as Halo (PC) and the Brothers in Arms series, Gearbox unleash yet another FPS on the masses, this time based on the popular Aliens franchise. SEGA’s press release states that “players are part of a United States Colonial Marine squad and must prepare to face an alien assault more intense and horrific than ever before.” With a story written be acclaimed authors Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, the experience will feature “claustrophobic environments” and a “brooding soundtrack”. Apart from the single player mode on offer there will also be a four player co-op multiplayer mode. No definitive date has yet been announced but we can expect contact in 2009. Game over man! Game over!

aliensvpred 150x150 PS3 Games DatabaseAliens Vs. Predator

Publisher: Sega
Developer: Rebellion
Out: Q1 2010
Source: IGN

Also known as “the title that killed the Aliens RPG game” (see: In Memorium below),  AVP was deemed a more lucrative property by Sega so when it was time for an Aliens game to get face-hugged, Aliens Vs. Predator got the nod above the RPG take on the Aliens franchise. Just be thankful they didn’t shelve Aliens: Colonial Marines as well. The good news is that Rebellion have a long legacy of pitting various xenomorphs against each other so we’re confident this game could be the next big thing in intergalactic conflict resolution.

alpha protocol 150x150 PS3 Games DatabaseAlpha Protocol

Publisher: SEGA
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Out: Q1 2009
Source: Press Release

SEGA are not just throwing xenomorphs at us in 2009 – expect some covert action RPG goodness as well. Alpha Protocol is (once again) from Obsidian Entertainment, the luminaries that brought us Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and Neverwinter Nights 2. You play Michael Thorton, a precocious young agent “cast out by his government” and possessing information that can divert an upcoming international catastrophe. “Every choice the player makes as Michael Thorton will carry consequences for his future and the fate of the world.” No precise release date as of yet but 2009 seems likely.

rorona PS3 Games DatabaseAtelier Rorona

Publisher: Gust Corporation
Developer: Gust Corporation
Out: TBC
Source: PS3Center.net

Exclusive RPG? PS3? It’s ironic these days but you don’t often see those words in the same sentence. Gust promises to buck that trend however with its new PS3-only title Atelier Rorona. The first next-gen entry in the popular Atelier series, Roronoa will continue the previous games’ focus on crafting and synthesising. With Gust taking these tentative steps on to the PS3 platform, does this suggest that the company’s other popular franchises, Mana-Khemia and Ar Tonelico, are also on their way?

alice 150x150 PS3 Games DatabaseAmerican McGee’s Alice

Publisher: EA
Developer: Spicy Horse Games

We covered the American McGee’s Alice coming to the PS3 announcement back in February. Alice is a new twisted take on the famed Lewis Carroll tale so expect plenty of “Eat me, drink me, scare the crap out of me.” Check out the article for more information.

thumb unknown23 PS3 Games DatabaseAmphibian Man

Publisher: TBC
Developer: KD Vision Games
Out: 2009 ?
Source: Press Release

Based on Alexander Belyaev’s popular novel of the same name, Amphibian Man follows the concept of a mankind able to breathe underwater after advances in technology. The RPG will allow players (who we assume are taking the role of Ichtiand, the protagonist in the book) as he explores the oceans and intervenes in an escalating conflict between the world’s super-powers. The press release is nearly a year old and the absence of any mention of it on KDV Games’ own website suggests that they too have forgotten that they’re making it.

apb 150x150 PS3 Games DatabaseAPB

Publisher: Realtime Worlds
Developer: Realtime Worlds
Out: 2009
Source: Press Release

Realtime Worlds brings us All Points Bulletin (APB), a MMO along the lines of GTA and Crackdown. Originally planned to be released on PC, 360 and PS3 concurrently, only the PC version is now being quoted as making a 2009 release date but that’s not to say its PS3 cousin won’t appear along side it towards the end of the year. We won’t be surprised if this game makes our “Games of 2010 list” however. Considering the “GTA MMO” is often quoted as Rockstar’s “Holy Grail”, might Realtime Worlds swoop in and create a contender to the crown? Only time (and city-wide mass mayhem) will tell.

Bohemia Interactive Studio returns with ArmA2, a military simulation game for multi-platforms and the latest addition in the popular Operation Flashpoint series. The game will introduce a “role-playing feel” and utilises the new “Real Virtuality” engine. If you’ve seen the trailers out there you know that this means the game will look gorgeous.

ass2 PS3 Games DatabaseAssassin’s Creed 2

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer:  Ubisoft
Out: Q4 2009
Source: Ubisoft Sales Report

It was no surprise that it was coming, just when it was coming that was still an unknown factor. The first game sold six million copies so only a studio inflicted with rampant dementia would not follow up with a sequel. That said, the first game was acutely criticised for its repetitiveness so we’re hoping the next edition in the series will address this widely known gripe. As for its setting, there were some rumours flying around late in 2008 that Creed 2 would be switching the dusty and dangerous environs of the Middle East to the filthy and dangerous surroundings of France circa 1790. Will players be performing world-changing assassinations against the backdrop of one of the must frenzied periods in French history? Sounds good to us.

[Update] Since this entry a lot has happened regarding Assassin’s Creed II. France is out, Italy is in. Read more here.

Astro Boy gets the big screen treatment next year and the obligatory game tie-in should see itself exploding on shelves around the same time. Little is known about the game other than it’s coming some time in Q4 2009.

thumb unknown24 PS3 Games DatabaseAvalon

Publisher: TBC
Developer: Climax
Out: God knows
Source: Press Release

Amazingly one of the first games announced for the next-next generation of consoles, we haven’t seen head nor tail of Avalon for nigh on five years now. The press release hypes the game’s proprietary engine and as a “multi-vehicle shooter with a unique and original twist.” Is the twist that it’s never getting released? We kinda saw that one coming Bruce. No one looks directly at you for the entire film but that annoying kid.

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft (we think)
Out: 2009
Source: Press Release

James Cameron stops messing about at the bottom of the ocean and crawls back into a director’s chair to give us Avatar this year. The premise is audacious with a heavy mix of typical Cameron traits: sci-fi, new film-making technology and an attention to detail that makes most actors cry. The game version of the film is being handled by Ubisoft and is, somewhat fittingly considering Cameron’s usual scope, an MMO. That’s all we know. Seriously, The King of the World is quite protective of his new toys.

backbreaker PS3 Games DatabaseBackbreaker

Publisher: TBA
Developer: NaturalMotion
Out: 2009
Source: Press Release

NaturalMotion are probably better known as the studio behind the technology Euphoria, seen most recently in connection to haphazard Stormtroopers getting picked up by conflicted dark apprentices and thrown into TIE-fighters in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Utilising their own engine to what we can only hope will be new heights, NaturalMotion bring American football game Backbreaker to the masses this year. Unlike other similar sports games, Backbreaker purports real-life tackles through the use of the aforementioned DMS engine. Can a game sell well purely on the promise that the tackles will always be different, always be realistic and always make you cringe each and every time? Sure, why not.

batman 150x150 PS3 Games DatabaseBatman: Arkham Asylum

Publisher: Eidos
Developer: Rocksteady Studios
Out: 2009
Source: Press Release

The recently released new images we reported on the end of 2008 are tantalisingly good but the jury is still out on the Caped Crusader’s latest escapade through the halls of Arkham Asylum. Having Kevin Conroy and the brilliant Mark Hamill on board to handle the voice duties is a great bonus but will it be enough to elevate this game above the usual punch-and-search mechanics of previous Batman games? Only time will tell – in 2009 no doubt.

[Update] Check out some footage of the Bat. We’re getting excited just thinking about it.

Out: May 29th 2009
Source: Press Release

Previously released only in Japan, Battle Fantasia finally gets a European release nearly a full twelve months after it first appeared on the shelves of Akihabara. A NA PS3 release is still outstanding but, don’t forget, you can always import. Starting out as a two player arcade fighting game, Battle Fantasia very much borrows from the Guilty Gear series with battles played out in 2.5D. The game was greeted with favourable enough reviews (72%) so, if you’re looking for some smackdown before Tekken 6 hits, maybe this one is for you. Expect it on May 29th 2009.

Aptly hitting this winter, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 sees some frosty climes presented for our heroes to overcome. The release reveals that the game will focus on “‘B’ company” as they traverse and fight over varied environments such as snowy mountain tops, dense jungles and dusty villages.  We’re promised total destruction and, if you want to get some practice in before the game hits, see below.

Using the same Frostbite engine as its bigger brother (above), Battlefield 1943 is the downloadable multiplayer only Battlefield game akin to previous outing Battlefield Heroes. 1943 switches the war theatre to the Pacific conflict and, according to the men in the know:”The game offers endless hours of 24 player multiplayer action over three classic and tropic locations; Wake Island, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.” Check out some footage of the action over at the official site.

200px bayonettatitlecard 150x111 PS3 Games DatabaseBayonetta

Publisher: SEGA
Developer: PlatinumGames
Out: Q3 2009
Source: Press Release

Hideki Kamiya, esteemed creator of the Devil May Cry series, returns to the shooting genre with Bayonette, a stylised action romp with the eponymous witch sporting guns on both her feet and hands. Yeah, we can’t wait to see how this is going to work either. Bayonetta also uses her hair to “en-wrap” herself and perform some dazzling magical powers. Plot is thin on the ground but we do know that it is set in modern day and there are monsters masquerading as angels who are in need of some lead salads. Expect Bayonetta some time in Q3 2009.

[Update] The recent footage of the game is the oddest thing you may ever see.

The first BG&E was a sleeper that surprised nearly everyone with its fresh aesthetic and infectious game-play. This rumour (thankfully) has been shot down.

bionic commando 150x150 PS3 Games DatabaseBionic Commando
Publisher: Capcom

Out: May 22nd 2009

21 years after its original release on the NES, the re-imagining of Bionic Commando is coming for the next-generation of swinging action junkies. You play Nathan Spencer (voiced by former lead singer of Faith No More, Mike Patton), a cybernetically enhanced ex-spook now scheduled to be executed for a crime you didn’t commit. On the day of reckoning, an experimental weapon is detonated wiping out Ascension City, and with terrorists moving in to take up vacuum, the government is left with little choice – the reactivation of the Bionic Commando. The game has an eclectic team of talent behind it from Swedish developer GRIN to a Japanese Creative Director. We’re looking forward to see what they’ve come up with. Bionic Commando swings into action in Q1 2009.

Ah, Rapture. How you enthral us. Big Daddys and Little Sisters return in the sequel to the BAFTA winning (and Spike TV’s) 2007 Game of the Year. Despite rumours of being a timed PS3 exclusive, we expect the next episode in the watery dystopia to take story telling and game immersion to a new level on all platforms around Q4 2009.

black2 thumb1 PS3 Games DatabaseBlack 2

Publisher: EA
Developer: Criterion Games? (Probably not)
Out: 2009/2010
Source: IGN

We might associate the magnanimous gang over at Criterion Games with Burnout but let’s not forget that they also have a very successful FPS under their belts. Shunning high speed oncoming traffic for a brief moment back in 2006, Black hit with a splash and proved popular with those of us that liked stylised action and destroying everything in our path. That would be all of us then. Criterion have been at pains to inform us that they have no plans to follow Black up with a sequel. That said, Black 2 did pop up in an EA fiscal report (though, admittedly, this was a 2007 document), so don’t be surprised if the sequel is handed over to another studio to run with.

border small 150x150 PS3 Games DatabaseBorderlands

Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Gearbox Software
Out: February 2009
Source: Press Release

A sci-fi FPS with a twist, Borderlands replays the Gold Rush era on a galactic playing field. Seeking out the far flung planet Pandora, prospectors quickly realise their new home is devoid of the resources they were promised and all they’ve got for their troubles is anarchy and alien ruins. Hi-jinks ensure. Borderlands’ shtick comes from the ability to merge almost anything with anything else and form a weapon. With claims of 100,000s of weapons to be made (especially when you throw in that alien technology) this could be very interesting indeed. Borderlands will be with us in February 2009.

brutal3 150x125 PS3 Games DatabaseBrütal Legend

Publisher: EA (we hope)
Developer: Double Fine Studios
Out: October 13th (16th in EU) 2009
Source: Press Release

We love Double Fine Studios for Psychonauts and now they return with the bizarrely themed “Brütal Legend”. You play Eddie Riggs (voiced by Jack Black, who else?), a heavy-metal roadie who gets into a series of adventures after his belt buckle, splashed with some of Eddie’s blood after a freak guitar tuning accident (happens to us all the time), shows itself to be a cursed talisman and transforms Eddie into a Heavy Metal inspired fantasy alternate reality. We could not make this stuff up. Brütal Legend was in the news recently after being categorically snubbed during the Activision/Blizzard merger. Luckily, EA swooped in and picked up the musically enriched tongue-in-cheek wail-a-thon. Brütal Legend will be released in the Fall of 2009.

Not a port of the XBL version, Game Republic have already released Catan through the Japanese PSN. Though made from scratch for the PS3, Catan still follows the structure of the board-game quite closely. The board is made up of 19 randomly arranged hexagonal tiles, each representing a different type of terrain or resource. Strategy plays a large part as the user builds roads, armies and treaties (of a sort) with other players. We’re promised Catan will surface for us gaijin some time in Q1 2009 on the other PSNs.

Multiplayer focused shooter with players thrown into a battle between mankind and technology. We’re not that sure what to think about CellFactor just yet. It will be a DLC game so we’re assuming there will be more emphasis on “accessibility” rather than “super HD graphics”. We do like the fact that you can rip debris off a wall with your MIND and then hurl it at your opponent. That would come in handy around here at PS3 Attitude when Danny goes off on one about Street Fighter II and loses the plot entirely (which is quite often, trust us). Check out our recent article where you can view some snazzy video footage of the game.

Check that release date. We’re assured that Cipher Complex is not a figment of our imagination. Of course, we heard that about Santa Claus too. The game’s premise is standard enough: recon satellite goes down, diplomatic avenues are exhausted, protagonist with ridiculous sounding name (John Cipher!) is sent in to find out what happened. Admittedly, we actually like the sound of this one as it seems to be at least a spiritual successor to “Why-the-hell-don’t-they-make-a-next-gen-Syphon-Filter” with equal elements of hide and seek and action gun-play. We’ll put in a call out to Edge-Of-Reality to see if they simply just forget they were making it. It happens you know. One time we all came to work here at PS3 Attitude and just played games all day. These things are more common in the workforce than you would imagine.

Animated movie game tie-in time. (Say that fast three times). One for the kids maybe but, if the wacky trailer is anything to go by, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the adults who will be picking up Cloudy With a Chance of Meatball this year if only to get the chance to play in a level made entirely from jello. The premise is your standard animated movie fare. Flint Lockwood is a misunderstood kid hell bent on becomming an inventor. After finally making a breakthrough (and making it rain hamburgers) the town of Chewandswallow (we’re not making this up) now has to contend with a weather system featuring only food.  We haven’t seen any footage from the obligatory videogame but we’re assuming it will utilise the game’s quirky humour, colourful visuals and, considering the plot almost screams “food fight!”, game-play that focuses firmly on the culinary side of things.

Another tech demo (also found over at Volatile Games’ secret project vault) shows off the virtues of Crime Scene or Triple A Shooter – the website is a tad ambiguous and we’re not sure just what is demo and what actually represents a game in development.  The technology in question looks impressive enough, with real-time lighting and a graphically impressive recreation of a murder scene. Check it out for yourself. Are these glimpses into games we’ll be playing towards the end of this (or even next) year?

Hard to tell really. We’ll update this entry when more information is known.

How about rescuing people from everyone else’s game? That’s exactly what’s happening with Cross Edge as hero Yuto Kannagi attempts to free characters including “Souls from Disgaea, Darkstalkers, Mana Khemia, Atelier Marie, Spectral Souls and Ar Tonelico”. Hang on, that actually sounds like a cool idea.

Following up on last year’s surprise sci-fi gore-fest hit “Dead Space”, Redwood Shores are turning their attention to 14th century poetry and adapting Dante Alighieri’s classic “The Divine Comedy”. Part I, the titular “Dante’s Inferno”, with its many layers of perdition on offer, is a poem that is starkly violent, populated with chaotic visions of torture and despair, and hence not for the feint hearted. Considering the jitters we got from their last game, we’re sure the boys from Redwood are really looking forward to channelling the material and making a psychologically rich game that could finish off the remaining sanity of gamers world-wide. If you know your medieval Italian literature (and who doesn’t?) you’ll have some idea that this is going to be intense and will most likely make Dead Space look like “The Jetsons”.

This is more a sign however of how far the PS3 has come in terms of penetration since the first game’s release back in 2006 more than anything else. Set several years after the undead invasion of Willamette, Dead Rising 2 now sees flash zombie outbreaks strike across the United States. From what we can tell for the early released information, the game will mostly take place in the fulcrum point of gambling and sin, Fortune City. Lauded in its day for its adult themes, fantastic graphics and open game-play, Deus Ex’s follow up, Invisible War, was greeted with similar recognition from critics but less aplomb and more “What have you done to my favourite game?” laments from its loyal and, now disgruntled, fan-base. Deus Ex deals with motifs such as extremism, the frightening prospect of rampant out-of-control technology and a two tier class system that such scientific advances would introduce. Power, religion and politics, all thrown into a melting pot with protagonist/saviour JC Denton hurled from one earth-shattering event to another. We were big fans of the first game and, predictably, had our qualms with the second but we’re confident Eidos can knock this one out of the nano-park.

Another one of Volatile’s tech demos (see Continental Hotel and Crime Scene above), we’re not sure if this is ever going to see the light of day. The demo in question is impressive, albeit a little dated in terms of today’s graphical capabilities, but then again, it is nearly four years old. The text that accompanies the video is blurry and hence hard to decipher but we think it names the soldier seen in the video as King Pyrrhus of Epirus. Fans of linguistics out there will know that the term “phyrric victory” was named after King Pyrrhus when he defeated the Romans in 280 BC. There’s an interesting tale to tell here about this almost mythical period in history when Rome was gallivanting across Europe and laying the smacketh on anyone who go in the way. Presenting a story where Rome is the aggressor and the player is faced with almost impossible odds is something we’re intrigued by. Think 300 and the Battle of Thermopylae – but with less photoshopped abs.

The sequel promises “strategic environmental combat opportunities available to both you and your enemies” along with a more open environment. A destroyed (open) city, the result of a powerful teen gone awry? Sounds like Fallout 3 meets Akira to us. Advance warning: this game has “cancelled” written all over it. We don’t know much about Faith and a .45 other than the fact that Danish developer Deadline Games are working on it. The press release from nearly a year ago states that the game will be “an intense and atmospheric shooter, [with] a heavy focus on characters, co-operative gameplay, road movie storytelling, and cinematic aesthetics.” It’s definitely a little quirky. Shakesville’s Melissa McEwan wrote “Congrats on your awesome new game, Sony. I’m positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes.” Apart from the ability to use long words no one really knows, Melissa was offended by the gameplay mechanic of stuffing the eponymous Princess with cake so as to make it more difficult for the player’s opponents to carry her off. “Why not coins?”, she asked. Taking over from Piranha Bytes, Spellbound take a stab at the next instalment of the Gothic series. The game was announced over a year ago and then everything went silent. Is it still in development? Probably. Will it make the 2009 release window? Maybe. Note: The PS3 version has been hinted at but, as of this time, the game is not officially bound for the PS3. Don’t be surprised if this one doesn’t make the cut for next year.

If history repeats itself (GTA III and GTA: Vice City and then GTA: San Andreas), expect to see a GTA V (or more likely GTA: Insert Name of Fictional City) this Christmas using the same engine created for GTA IV.  Maybe this would explain why a certain exclusive DLC deal for a rival console took so long to materialise?

That’s about it in a nutshell as we’re not even too sure who’s making the game. The duplicitous teen sensation/banshee that is Hananh Montana hit the PS3 back in January; likely flying under your ever-attentive game radar. It did ours. If we’re being completely honest, and this will come as little surprise, we know nothing about this game. We assume there is some singing, maybe a smattering of mini-games and definitely some dodgy underage over-sexed awkwardness that we shouldn’t even be mentioning. Who knows? Even the press release says nothing about it and just proffers some screens and a game-play video. After about 15 seconds into it before the assault of “boom boom clappity clap” caused our eyes to bleed, we had to stop and turn it off. Who are we kidding? We watched it all and loved every second of it. It’s actually a rhythm game and there’s even what appears to be a faux-Guitar Hero section where you tick off notes as they appear on Miley’s cute guitar! OK, we’ve gone too far.

Fists of Fury. Game of Death. Enter the Dragon. If these renown Bruce Lee films resonate with you, not only are you showing your age, but also a love of classic 70s kung-fu movies. Kung-fu cinema of a few decades ago was glaringly different to the martial arts fare of today. Absent is the wire-work,  big budgets and innumerable gangsta rappers convinced they can act. In its place was chop-socky at its finest.  Invicible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is the brain child of Blitz Arcade’s animator Ollie Clarke who is also acting as Project Manager for the game. It’s a full-on kung-fu homage to the genre’s humble beginnings so expect cheesy dialogue, tongue-in-cheek humour and an emphasis on more action and less plot. Not that there isn’t a plot of course. Ok, here we go. With the sequel announced (quite spectacularly) via a video posted on Xbox Live, Lost Planet’s relationship with the PS3 is somewhat frosty considering the delay Sony fans experienced compared to their 360 counterparts. Also, despite the extra playable characters and bundled DLC, the port was universally seen as inferior to its 360 cousin (framerate was poor, slowdown evident and, graphically, the game looked like it was run through a blur filter). So, should we even care if a sequel to a well received though hardly monumental game even comes to the PS3? Of course we should. The new trailer looks scrumptious and it’s intriguing to see the gelid environs of the first game are now joined with locations containing lush vegetation and sweltering jungle. We still think Lost Planet 2 is coming to the PS3 though maybe as a latecomer like its precursor. We’ll therefore keep an eye on it in our Games Database.

MAG (or M.A.G. if you like acronyms) was Sony’s big reveal at 2008′s E3 and was greeted with a collection of raised eyebrows and cautious optimism. (Most people were hoping for some in-game God of War III footage presumably). The “Massive Action Game” sees 256 concurrent players fighting it out in the same environment with players going through a unique promotion system with the non-cannon fodder (amazingly) getting promoted to lead their squads. With teams of eight players banding together to tactically get an advantage over their competitors, it apparently will not descend into a giant free-for-all with people scurrying about like their heads are on fire and dying willy-nilly but a strategic war game played out by a cast of thousands (ok, hundreds). Zipper have the pedigree when it comes to shooters with the successful SOCOM franchise under their belt, but how they will handle the challenges and scope of a MMO shooter is yet to be seen. Taking cue from the successful Operation Flashpoint title for the PC (and Xbox), Bohemia Interactive returns with the HD war-theatre campaign Dragon Rising. After numerous postponements we’re promised the game will surface this March and open up the island of ‘Skira’; a play on real-life island Kiska and part of Alaska (with a wonderful real war history if you’re interested) that acts as the backdrop for the game. The developers have painstakingly recreated the island and have included the concept of “persistent damage”. In other words: when you blow something up – it stays blown up for the duration of the game.

With Writers’ Guide Award-nominated author Rhianna Pratchett handling the scripting duties, expect Overlord II to up the ante in 2009. The press release quotes Director and Overlord Lead Lennart Sas with stating: “Epic battles, all new Minion play mechanics, a stunningly detailed new visuals and a fresh theme – Overlord II’s really packing a punch.” Lennart is also excited about the changes found in the sequel noting: “[We're] shifting the world to a new era where a Roman-inspired Empire rises as the arch-enemy of the Overlord, which leads to an epic clash between the regimented forces of a sprawling state and the faster, harder, more manic minion horde.” We thought the million selling original was fun and worthy of picking up therefore we’ll keep an eye on this potential sleeper-hit of 2009.

Not much is known about Q-Games’ two new PixelJunk titles planned for this year other than the fact that they’re coming. Don’t forget that there was some talk about some PJ games last year over at Gamasutra. The games mentioned at the time were “Eden” and “Dungeons”. Considering Eden is out (and frustrating the hell out of most of us) it’s a safe bet to assume that one of the other two recently announced titles is the aforementioned Dungeons. The last press release about Blitz Games’ despotic zombie-controlling city-destroying game was back in October 2005 with nothing but radio silence since then. Maybe the undead got them. The latest missive from Blitz communicates that the game is not cancelled but they have failed to secure a publisher so are hence following other avenues. Their library doesn’t boast the best of properties with the only mature game quoted being Reservoir Dogs (which we played on the Xbox and was pretty poor). Blitz usually make games like Barbie Horse Adventures and Bratz: The Movie. Maybe they should leave the zombie/Dungeon Keeper type games to the likes of Capcom and EA?

In a flagrant display of titillation and shock tactics, the game will feature “Directors’ Hall of Shame” candidate Uwe Boll and a host of “Playboy Playmates and celebrities”. If the released screenshots are anything to go by (yes, the protagonist can be seen shooting from what is described as a “Badgersaw”) expect to see a rash of riff-raff Z-listers who were rejected from Celebrity Big Brother to feature prominently.

thumbp proto PS3 Games DatabasePrototype

Publisher: Sierra Entertainment / Activistion

Out: April 2009

American band Cake sang about it best when they said: “Some people drink Pepsi, some people drink Coke”, and with the release of Prototype and inFamous in 2009 we can’t help but feel that most people will be leaning towards one over the other. Of course, it’s not the first time that two thematically similar games will be released around the same period but we are interested to see how the PS3 exclusive inFamous squares up to the multi-plat Prototype. Developed by Canada’s Radical Entertainment (best known for their Hulk games) PROTOTYPE (official typeset) shares the same open-ended city traversing elements of its competitor though adds in a delicious dose of shape-shifting and skill stealing. You play Alex Mercer, a man “haunted by his past and fighting a secret war in New York City” who can “climb or wall-run across any surface, jump 30 stories high, and destroy anything that crosses his path.” Ah, so that’s where those Hulk games are coming in handy. In case you’re wondering, we’re slightly more in the Prototype camp here at PS3 Attitude though this may change as the two games get closer to a release.

It’s no secret that we thought 2008′s TGS was a bit of a wash-out. After such early promise, the only new games announced for the PS3 were Demon’s Souls (a title that still, grammatically, annoys the hell out of us) and Quantum Theory. The latter smacks of equal parts Gears of War and Devil May Cry and an “organic” cover system in reference to the tower each of the lead characters (Sid and Filena) are attempting to climb quoted as being actually “alive” and capable of throwing up pillars of bullet defying basalt. Sid’s weapon is also quoted as being a gun and a sword. Those crazy Japanese!

A PS3 update is now on its way which gains the subtitle “Fists of Plastic” and a wealth of other updates. Will RDKF:FOP replicate the media frenzy seen with the last game Alex Exans’ had some involvement in? We doubt it but this PSN game could be a surprise gem this year.

We’re expecting big things from “Daddy of the FPS” developer id Software this year. Not only do we get a new Doom (see the first part of this series), we also get RAGE which is already being billed as the “studio’s next blockbuster franchise”. Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software tells us in the press release that: “RAGE represents a new direction for our games [and] is a shooter unlike any other, developed on our cutting edge new technology, and built to the exacting standards id is famous for.” RAGE hit the headlines last year when it was announced that certain textures in the PS3 version would be of higher fidelity than the 360 version due to the capacity gifting virtues of the PS3′s Blu-ray. Did we just stoke an old fanboy fire? We believe we just did.

You can’t wait for Rainy Woods, can you? OK, we’re kidding as we’re pretty sure this is another one of those games on this list that you (probably) have never heard of. We reported on it way back in September of 2007 and showed a trailer which blatantly lied to us at its end with that whole “Coming 2008″ announcement. It does suggest that the game won’t slip a whole year and will be with us in 2009 but, you never know. The game smacks of a weird hodge-podge mix-mash of Twin Peaks, Silent Hill and Primal Fear as you play David Young Henning, an FBI agent with a pretty cool quirk – if schizophrenia can be referred to as cool. Or a quirk. David’s alternate personality, Jeter, pops up every now and again to help out in trying to solve the murder mystery. Apparently the game’s similarities to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks was so evident that the game has been dragged back into R&D to make it less “plagiaristic”. Maybe that 2010 date is looking more likely after all.

Hands up. This is probably the flimsiest source we have for a game on our 2009 list. We know the game exists, we know a logo was created and shown at 2008′s E3 and we know that Rockstar are making it. We don’t know however if it is, in fact, cancelled, a PS3 exclusive or will even be any good. The original game, which hit on the previous wave of consoles, was a surprise hit for Rockstar. Who’d have thought a Western would sell so well when most people are obsessed with future shooters, rhythm games and/or outlandish platformers? Well, it did and the sequel may surface this year. Or may not. Or may be cancelled. We really don’t know but it makes the list anyway.

[Update] Rockstar have confirmed that it’s coming. Check out the following article.

thumb redfaction PS3 Games DatabaseRed Faction: Guerrilla

Publisher: THQ
Developer: Volition Inc.
Out: June 2009
Source: Press Release

Remember Red Faction? Of course you do. It was the game that promised the ability to “destroy your environment and change the outcome of the game completely”. Then you quickly realised that you could only blow up “special” types of Martian rock and the much trumpeted “environment altering” mechanic spiralled into mere distraction/frustration. Set fifty years after the climatic events of the original, Mike Kulas, president of Volition, Inc. states in the release: “Red Faction: Guerrilla expands the signature destruction elements of the series and pushes the boundaries of next-gen gaming on a massive, terra-formed Mars where gamers can literally tear down the enemy EDF presence brick by brick. With a new 3rd person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we’re excited to revitalize the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms.” We admit to being a little let down by the original game (really? with that opening paragraph?) but we’re optimistic that, with new hardware and the skills over at Volition, maybe the developers were hampered by the hardware available with the last generation and the new tech will allow them to fully realise their design aspirations.

thumb re5 PS3 Games DatabaseResident Evil 5

Source: Press Release

Despite the fact that Takeuchi-san confirmed that RE5 is more or less RE4 with some more bells and whistles, we’re actually not that bothered. It’s like someone offering you more chocolate cake. It’s chocolate cake! What’s not to like? The game was steeped in some early controversy with claims of racism fuelled by the fact that the first trailer showed Chris Redfield (who’s white) shooting rabid African zombie villagers. The key word here is “African” and apparently there was some issue with the fact that they were black. The fact is, the word people should be focusing on here is actually not “African” but “zombie”. When you’re zombified, this aspect of your “life” takes precedence over what ethnicity you USED to be. With a game set in Africa it’s hardly surprising to see the zombie population mostly dark skinned. Zombification is not predujiced. Zombies don’t care whose brains they eat. Later trailers showed zombies of other ethnicities and people realised that they were beating an (un)dead horse and focused on the fact that there’s a new RE game coming! And that’s all that matters.

Despite claiming a Q1 2009 release date there is little actually known about Pandemic’s Saboteur. What we do know is that Paris is the location, World War II is the period and the game has an “Okami” feel to it. We like Paris and we really like Okami so all this is ticking the necessary boxes for us so far. Gamespot had a preview of the game where we learn that the plot surrounds “an Irish man named Sean and a regular among the racing groups of Paris. Although the German Army’s grip over the area is becoming tighter everyday, he ignores their presence, until one by one his friends are killed by the Nazis. This finally breaks Sean’s tolerance of the German presence, and he takes up arms against them to gain his revenge.” Go Sean!

Publisher: Koch / Deep Silver

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel is the subject of a bit of an in-joke here at PS3 Attitude. We’ll let you in by revealing that, of all the games we receive press releases for, Sacred 2 is by far the most publicised game by any PR company we know of. Seriously, most games receive maybe a dozen press releases from announcement to release (even the big titles like LittleBigPlanet – which received 9 in case you were wondering) however Sarced 2 literally has 63 (yes, I counted them). Or 122 if you include the announcements whenever a new screenshot is released. We’re not being derisory towards the game (or the zealous support its PR company is showing it) but this rampant press releasing is something of a phenomenon. The “joke” is that, despite the insane volumes of data, images, behind-the-scenes footage, video and other miscellaneous content released to the press – we’ve never chosen to report on it. Not once. Oops! On to the game. The best way to describe the aesthetic would be “Evil Dead on acid”. There are undead, there are colours, there is so much going on that your eyes will bleed rainbows. But hey, why are we talking about it when we could pluck any one of the many descriptions from the library of press releases? “SACRED 2 is a purely action-based role-playing game, featuring six diverse and in-depth characters, each with their own distinct gameplay style. SACRED 2 will offer the player two different campaigns; one in the Light, the other in Shadow. The chosen path will influence the reception of the player in different environments; a city which welcomed a good character is likely to be hostile towards an evil one.” Sacred 2 hits at the end of March. We can’t wait – if anything the press releases might stop.

Brash Entertainment had some great things going for it. Veterans of the industry who knew what they were doing, some interesting licence agreements with the likes of Alvin and the Chipmonks and The Tale of Despereaux franchise, and $400 million in venture capital. Sure, kids games based on kids films maybe, but these properties usually fair well in terms of units sold and it’s not like they weren’t prepared to venture into more adult themes (like the SAW film franchise). Alas, no one told them about the “Curse of the Superman Game Property” and Brash picked up the rights for the Man of Steel for a new console outing. You saw it coming: Brash officially shut down late last year. Of course, releasing game tie-ins to such stellar films as “Jumper” didn’t help along the way or the investment in properties such as the aforementioned (hexed) Superman game, Night at the Museum 2 (what were they thinking?) and the SAW game. Therefore we’re pretty sure SAW is now as dead as a comely American teenage girl who didn’t turn on the light when going to fetch her cardigan.

This is an odd one. Not content with playing the usual games that the rest of us mere mortals have to contend with, cyberathletes are to get their own tailored FPS experience enfused with various different FPS elements (there’s more than just shooting things?). Severity was sponsored by the Cyberathlete Professional League’s parent company and was/is in development by Escalation Studios. As the league is on hiatus at the moment there was valid speculation that Severity was cancelled. Not so accordingly to Escalation’s Tom Mustaine. Taking over the reins from Zipper Interactive (don’t worry, they’re busy with MAG – see above), Slant Six Games have worked diligently on the 7th gen version of the popular SOCOM series for a number of years now. Unfortunately, all that hard work didn’t really pay off if we’re to gauge the general consensus regarding its general lack of awesomeness when the game hit in NA and Japan last year. Seriously under-baked, the game was a prime victim of “Hit-that-release-window-or-else”-itis with numerous features (like, you know, a reliable online service; kinda needed considering the game is, wait for it, online only) nearly completely missing from the original release. Since the early tumultuous days of SOCOM:Confrontation, we’ve witnessed a flurry of patches and fixes and the game is now starting to resemble an actual viable and fun experience. We get it soon.

The fact is, some things are better left dead. If you were born before 1980, and curious about what this game might be, there’s a good chance that you are not aware of the furore Splatterhouse caused nearly twenty years ago. Unless of course you have a penchant for retro-gaming or an older brother/sister who let you see his or her “adult” games back in the 1990s. You see, back in the burgeoning and nascent era of video games when plagiarism was not only permitted but downright promoted, Splatterhouse was a such a game that fell into the category of “knock-off press-bait” due to its “influences” and less than friendly content. Though not blatantly copying another game of course, it contained serious dollops of inspiration from the horror movies of the time like Friday the 13th and Hallowe’en. Just look at the hockey-mask original Splatterhouse protagonist Rick wore! Apart from the “similarities” with other properties the title also has the accolade of being the first game to be banned in arcades in America due to its overt violence and sacrilegous imagery (an inverted cross appears – somewhere). Namco however have decided that the industry has all grown up since then and that the franchise needs a reboot. We’re going to be completely honest here – the early (and gory) footage of the game reminds us far to much of the over-the-top shock tactics of the original. We’ll keep an eye on it but only to see if we’re right in our prediction that it’s going to be less than stellar.

When SOE announced The Agency back in June of 2007 there were some who wondered how the whole thing would work. Others thought that they were really on to something. We’re firmly in the latter camp and hence are truly looking forward to getting our hands on the upcoming spy MMO. The concept is simple enough: you play a spy and member of one of two rival covert factions. Whether you chose the slick Bond-esque UNITE or the more visceral and “rule averse” PARAGON is a matter of personal taste. Either will present an engrossing espionage themed gaming experience. We’re hoping that the delivery of the game is fine-tuned and players will not have to resort to dispatching copious amounts of unnamed henchmen in order to upgrade a particular gadget. The premise allows for in-game relationships to build between the protagonists with innumerable degrees of customisation. Matt Wilson, Director of Development at SOE Seattle, assures that The Agency will “take the online gaming industry to new places [...], not only in terms of its theme, but also in its design. It’s accessible to all types of players, blending genres and changing up established conventions. It’s different from anything SOE has released before.”

The biggest difference between Godfather II and its competent predecessor is in scope. This time around the reach of the Italian Mafia now spreads to multiple cities as players get the opportunity to orchestrate a crime empire from New York to Florida and even as far as Cuba. The key word here is “empire” as the Godfather games distinguishes itself as more than a GTA clone with bad suits by infusing a sense of management and wealth acquisition from the purchasing of property. Such locations can then act as fronts and generate money to help the player progress up the precarious ladder of the Cosa Nostra. With a family of crime specialists in such areas as arson, extortion and even first aid at hand, it’s this quote from the press release that has us choking on our perfectly prepared pasta: “The Godfather II expands on the popular gameplay mechanics of the first game and doubles down on the series’ signature BlackHand control scheme, which now features even more visceral hand-to-hand brutality at your fingertips, introducing a new combo system, pressure tactics and executions.” All this suggests that The Godfather II is an offer we can’t refuse. The Last Remnant has the unfortunate accolade of being noted more as the symbol of Square Enix’s decision to throw their support behind the Xbox 360 in Japan than as a game judged on its on merits. The game’s development is peppered with surprises from its choice of engine (the Unreal variety as opposed to SE’s usual White Engine (Crystal Tools)) to its simultaneous release schedule, a decision seen as a tactic for SE to break into the lucrative US market. The reception of the 360 edition has been mixed at best with a metacritic score of 65 evident of the multiple technical and playability issues many reviewers had with the game. In fairness there have been some polarised views across the industry with scores ranging from 90 to 25; maybe it’s literally an acquired taste. But the main query here is simply: with the PS3 getting a port of The Last Remnant some time in 2009 – what’s it going to be like? We’re not sure to be honest, and despite the usual post timed exclusive bells and whistles that always seem to appear when someone is late to the party, we’re still cautious considering the core issues the game was criticised for will still be present on the PS3 (i.e. the Unreal Engine which, let’s face it, developers have not always played well with on Sony’s machine). We are officially adopting a wait and see attitude here at PS3 Attitude regarding The Last Remnant. Could it be a surprise hit for the PS3 in 2009? We wouldn’t put it past the maestros at Square Enix to take on board the 360 version’s criticism and deliver a stellar piece of RPG goodness.

When David Jaffe left SCE Santa Monica studios there were two main questions. Is God of War III doomed? And what the hell is the outspoken director going to do next? Well, considering David’s own hyperbolic comments about what he’s already seen of Kratos’ next (if you missed it he basically said it practically had sex with his eyeballs) we’re left with the second head-scratcher. Jaffe already has been quite frank about why he left Sony, created his own studio and then went back to the Twisted Metal series. With a three-game exclusive deal with his ex-employer it just made good business sense apparently. Speaking to Wired, Jaffe stated: “It was a way to get some money in the bank, it was a way to get everybody hired, get all the equipment going, and kind of make sure that we could get a game out within this year sort of as a test.” Did we mention David was outspoken? David goes on to talk about how much the premise opened up for them now with the new technology available and that this is not just a shameless money spinning venture. We’re big Twisted Metal fans (and David Jaffe fans for that matter) here at PS3 Attitude so we’re looking forward to getting our hands on a high-def Sweet Tooth this year.

Arm-bar. Triangle choke. Kimura. If these words are getting you salivating then you’re obviously looking forward to THQ’s upcoming UF2 2009 Undisputed game. The graphics look great with real life superstars of the mixed-martial arts sport scanned and mo-capped to an inch of their lives. The action also looks pleasantly brutal. If fighting games are your bag and you’re maybe tired of hadokens or Iron Fists maybe this is something you should be looking into.

uncharted2 cr PS3 Games DatabaseUncharted 2: Among Thieves

Publisher: SCE
Developer: Naughty Dog
Out: Q4 2009
Source: Press Release

Uncharted is not one of the best games of 2008 (though technically released in 2007). It’s one of the best games. Period. Not because it’s graphically awesome (it is) or because the story is better than most tripe well-established movie producers are serving up. Uncharted is a stellar title because it shows just what is possible within this medium we love so much. With the introduction of Nathan Drake, the PS3 (and gaming in general) has received a new icon. Sure, he won’t grace lunch-boxes or kids’ bed-spreads but, for us slightly older gamers, the wry witted and everyman adventurer harks back to the heroes we remember from our childhood. We love Drake, and when the recent teaser for Among Thieves surfaced recently we admit that we got shivers. Naughty Dog struck gold with the original game but then teased that there was more under the PS3′s hood they were eager to harness. The second coming of Drake sees some of that extra power with even greater graphical fidelity, smoother animations, the stealth element but, most impressive of all, more great story-telling that makes the games so appealing. Shunning family ties as his motive, unlike the first time out (we think), Drake follows the path of Marco Polo to Tibet and beyond in search of the fabled Cintamani Stone in the equally mythical city of Shambala. If we could time travel to Q4 2009 – we would.

Everyone and his cat knows that Dylan Job recently departed Incognito and set up his own studio entitled LightBox Interactive. What he’s taken with him is a reputation of creating kick-ass games (and some of the creative minds who worked on Warhawk) and a secret title we’re all clamouring to find out more about. If you’re following Dylan on Twitter you’ll notice that the poor guy is getting zero amount of sleep and is hard at work forging his new company, creating a new game and trying to stay his cheerful and amenable self. He’s pulling it off too – mostly. As for the new game, we’ve prodded and teased but the man just won’t give up any information. What little detail that has come out about the the game suggests it will be enjoyed by Warhawk lovers but also something fans of other genres would enjoy. We’ve also heard rumours that it’s  “Warhawk in SPAAAACEEE!” But, as you know, we don’t talk about rumours around these parts.

Games based on, well, games are always a tricky one to pin down. They obviously exist and, if you’re a member of this secret sect, get ready for Sega’s upcoming digital version of the Vancouver Winter Games of 2010. The press release promises a thrill a minute but the salient factors to us from this official missive are the lauded first person mode game-play (FPS long distance skiing FTW!) and a multi-player “challenge mode” which sounds very competitive indeed. We have to admit that we are strangely attracted to the idea of bobsleighing in HD.

Despite questionable claims as being vaporware, Wardevil is still apparently on track for a release sometime in 2009. Developed by Digi-guys, all we’ve really seen so far have been some pre-rendered sequences that, although impressive, really don’t give us enough to get all excited about the game. Yet. One of the most interesting elements of the game’s production is that of the engine involved. Digi-guys’s proprietary Real Time Engine (RTE1080) claims to output at 1920×1080 HD and run at 60 FPS. This suggests the game is nearly on par with FMV sequences. Such unsubstantiated claims as this haven’t helped some people’s insistence that the game is nothing than smoke and mirrors. We’re officially very interested in the game, and as soon as we hear more about it, you will be too.

Considered official canon, Watchmen: The End is Nigh takes place before the events depicted in Alan Moore’s universally adored Watchmen book. The graphic novel (soon to be adapted by 300′s Zack Snyder which we’re pretty sure is the drive behind the game’s development) is dark, violent, strange and utterly brilliant. The game will be released episodically with, so far, only Rorschach and Nite Owl (the second one) being playable characters. The visuals look appropriately slick and noir-ish with each segment of the game conjoined by animated panels suggestive of the inspirational comic book. As massive Watchmen fans we are hoping they don’t screw this up and are hopeful that this one’s going to be good.

WET is another one of those games that seems to be hanging around the peripheral just waiting the right opportunity to blow the minds of the willing. Featuring the beautiful, acrobatic and deadly mercenary Rubi, the press release succinctly describes the plot of the game with: “When [Rubi] agrees to help a wealthy man find and bring back his wayward son, all hell breaks loose and the tables are turned, as the man who hired her isn’t who he appeared to be. Now Rubi’s on the run, needing to find the man who left her for dead and leaving a massive body count in her wake.” The graphics appear luscious and the protagonist is a familiar though intriguing concept (think Faith meets Nariko meets Lara). We’re a sucker for high-flying acrobatics married with sword-play and gun battles so WET ticks literally every box that’s put in front of us.
