Eye of Marvel; PlayStation Eye playing cards on the way?

We don't usually do 'rumour and speculation' here at PS3 Attitude, but this seems strong enough to run with.

We've heard that Marvel will be releasing cards to use with the Eye of Judgement (or Eye of Judgment if you're American/Sony) next year to further expand the groundbreaking title's gameplay.

The new cards will feature all your Marvel favourites and will make use of the existing Eye of Judgement playing mat. Equally, the game could come out as a seperate Blu-ray disk or PS Store download but 'require The Eye of Judgment' in order to play it.

The way you play the game itself will change under the Marvel card set and most likely be supported by a future game update release. Assuming this is all true it would certainly make the Eye of Judgement less of a niche title and more of a mainstream winner, so we have our fingers crossed.

As soon as we get our hands on an official press release, this story remains in the rumour pot. If it were to happen, we expect it will go ahead around March next year.
[Thanks for the heads up 'P']

European PS Store updates for November 1st

"Two weeks in a row" I hear you cry. "Two weeks in a row and the EU store gets some great content".

Keep this up SCEE and we'll let you have the puppy back. He's safe - don't worry - apart from that one hair we sent you.

Here's the full list of updates for the store:

  • Tori Emaki - PS Eye game (£1.99)
  • Mesmerize - PS Eye game (£1.99)
  • Feel Ski - full game (£4.99)
  • Juiced 2: HIN - demo (free)
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 - demo (free)
  • Motorstorm Revenge Weekend - trailer (free)
  • PS Eye - trailer (free)
  • Lair "Call of the Beast" - trailer (free)
  • Uncharted "Introducing Naughty Dog" - trailer (free)
  • Uncharted "The Characters and Music" -trailer (free)
  • Uncharted - wallpaper (free)
  • Eye of Judgment "How to Play" - trailer (free)
  • Alien Vs Predator Requiem -movie trailer (free)
  • Hitman - movie trailer (free)
I have to say that both the PS Eye titles are strangely captivating. Along with Aqua Vita, they strike me as the kind of 'interactive art' that people have been talking about having in their homes for years. Put one on - get a book out - have a read to the sound of your virtual Japanese painting. Nice.

And Feel Ski is remarkably good fun, especially the online mode. A steal at less than a fiver, if you ask me. I bought two double espresso's in London yesterday and it cost me more than that.

European PS Store updates for 25th October

What can I say? We have ourselves a bone fide massive EU Store update on our hands people! It's like a revelation.

Of course, much of it has been sparked off by the launch of the PlayStation Eye - and I'm not complaining in the slightest. I get my Eye of Judgement pack tomorrow so I spent a tenner on three Eye compatible titles plus the Folklore expansion. I mean really - ten pounds for three full titles and some extra folks. Value for money or what?!

Here's the full burgeoning list of updates available at the Store, which for some of the time today was clearly buckling under the pressure as it was unavailable for a couple of hours...

  • Pixel Junk Racers - game (£4.99)
  • Aqua Vita - PS Eye game (£1.99)
  • Operation Creature Feature - PS Eye game (£3.49)
  • Trials of Topoq - PS Eye game (£3.49)
  • Eye Create - PS Eye application (free)
  • Tony Hawk's Proving Grounds - demo (free)
  • Ratchet and Clank - demo (free)
  • "The Kidnapped Folk" - Folklore add-on (£1.49)
  • "Halloween Livery" - Motorstorm add-on (free; and a nice touch too)
  • "Rachel Master" - Ninja Gaiden Sigma add-on (£2.99)
  • Tekken 5: DR Online mode - trailer (free)
  • Eye of Judgment Introduction - trailer (free)
  • Toy Home - trailer (free)
  • Midnight Club LA - trailer (free)
  • Metal Gear Online TGS - trailer (free)
  • Courage Under Fire - Blu-Ray movie trailer (free)
  • Beowulf - movie trailer (free)
  • Stardust - movie trailer (free)

Keep this up SCEE and we'll forget all about the past. Like it never happened... deal?

Worried about Eye of Judgement cards in the UK?

If you look at the Wizards of The Coast website (the people who produce the cards for The Eye of Judgement as well as iconic games like Magic: The Gathering), you'll find the UK distribution network less than inspiring.

I mean, who really wants to trot down to their not-so-local local Dungeons & Dragons hovel to get cards for a video game?

So you will be pleased to hear that as from this Friday (in line with the launch of the much anticipated PS3 exclusive) GAME are going to stock the cards across their 700+ stores in the UK and across Europe.

To help budding UK players, GAME will be running an offer in the first two weeks after launch whereby you will get 'starter' and 'booster' packs at a lower-than-usual price of £4.99 and £1.49 respectively if bought with the game. These will usually be priced at £7.99 and £2.99.

We're pretty sure other video game retailers will follow suit but we couldn't get any other chains to comment ahead of the launch. Since GAME control about 80% of the UK video game marketplace it's a safe bet most of our UK readers will high-tail it down to their local store anyway.

It's not clear on whether GAME will continue to stock the cards forever - that will depend on how many Eye of Judgement packs fly out the door.

So if you want to do your bit to ensure a steady stream of card packs without having to take a trip down Nerd Lane, go pre-order The Eye of Judgement now.

Note to SCEA - I refuse to spell it Judgment! This is the Queen's English wot I speak.

US PS Store updates for 18th October

As per usual, the US store got an update that trumps our EU store. Here's the list of available items:

  • Calling All Cars! - Game (re-issued at a new price of $4.99 until October 25th)
  • Folklore - Demo
  • Juiced 2 - Demo
  • Devil May Cry 4 TGS - Video
  • Turok "Dino Luring" - Video
  • Uncharted "Tech Dive" - Video
  • Burnout Paradise "Street Wheels" - Video
  • Rail & Ties - Movie Trailer
  • Incubus Alive at Red Rocks - Blu-Ray Movie Trailer
  • Underworld - Blu-Ray Movie Trailer
  • Eye of Judgment - Wallpapers

Although I'm personally not too excited at Juiced 2, I'm sure a lot of you will enjoy the demo.

Since I gave yesterday's EU store a grade, let's do it again: I give the US update a B (going in the right direction).

European PS3 releases for week beginning 15th October

I'm afraid you'll just have to keep playing those titles you've already purchased.

This week in the UK and Europe, there are no new titles.

Nada.
Nothing.
Zip.

Still, don't fret. Next week you're going to have a real cash flow problem.

Jericho (and the Jericho Special Edition), PES 2008, NHL 2K8, NBA 2K8 and the brilliant The Eye of Judgement are all due on the 26th. If you want to, you can click these links to pre-order now since you have no other purchasing decisions to make this week anyway!

US PS Store updates for 4th October

So, what did the US get that we didn't this week?

Here's the list of US PS Store releases, although as of writing this they haven't appeared on the network:

  • Go! Sports Ski Game ($2.99)
  • The Simpsons Demo
  • Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War Demo
  • NBA 08 and Eye of Judgment Video Tutorials
  • Uncharted Behind the Scenes Video
  • Haze developer interview Video
  • Tekkonkinkreet Movie Trailer
  • Surf's Up Movie Trailer

The Go! Sports Ski game is remarkably cheap. I thought LocoRoco Cocoreccho was cheap when it came out in the UK, but $2.99 (£1.46 or so) is amazing. Even if they swap the Dollar sign for a Pound sign when it hits Europe it'll still be good value.

Enjoy!

October is nearly here; PS3 Attitude's Big Three

Only a few more days until October, and that spare cash is already being earmarked for some new PS3 goodness.

In what might become a regular feature, here's the PS3 Attitude Big Three for October:

1. Skate

Tony Hawk has had his day. I'm sick of pulling crazy 10m point combos by sitting there and flatland tricking until my thumbs bleed, only to find out someone else did it for longer and scored 50m. For those of use that skate, used to skate or dreamt that they could skate, this is the one game that seems to finally capture reality and make it feel believable on a controller.

2. The Eye of Judgement

Being packaged with the seriously next-gen PlayStation Eye, this title promised to bring in old card player fans and win new one's alike. Think of it as a way to get into card battles without actually needing to still be at school, or have any real friends (like me).

3. Guitar Hero III

It's Guitar Hero. It's got a wireless guitar. It's on PS3. Nuff said.

Disclaimer: There's a slim chance Guitar Hero III will slip to 1st November over here. In the event of an emergency, replace this title with Jericho, which would have been number four if we'd called this feature PS3 Attitude's Big Four!

European PS Store release dates

Dutch website PS3only.nl have stumbled across a number of European PS Store release dates, apparently given out at a recent Benelux region press event.

Here's what they discovered:

LocoRoco Cocoreccho!: 20th September
Feel Ski: 4th October
Toy Home: 11th October

They also list Pixel Junk Racers and Snake Ball as coming in October; WipEout HD, High Velocity Bowling and Everyday Shooter coming this November; Elefunk, Pain and GT5 Prologue hitting the Store by this December.

Down for 'quarter 3' releases are Operation Creature Feature, Trials of Topaq, Aqua Vita and Eye Create. Since theses titles are all tied in to the PlayStation Eye release, I'm guessing that they mean 'Sony Fiscal Year Quarter 3'and not the actual third quarter of the year, so expect these before Christmas.

This also makes sense as they list Echochrome as 'Quarter 4', which would mean between January and March 2008.

PlayStation Home is listed as 'middle of Autumn' and Little Big Planet doesn't yet have a release date.

Leipzig GC 07: how clear was our crystal ball?

We've been a bit quite around PS3 Attitude whilst we gather all the nuggets of information from Leipzig and get the lined up. Liveblogging and updating the site around E3 taught us a few lessons about time management...

So, how good were the predictions and what does the future look like for the PS3, especially in the UK and Europe?

Predictions 1 & 2 - "Europe will get a video on demand service for the PS3 and PSP" and "The PS3 will gain Freeview in the UK."

Sony announced PlayTV for the PS3, a twin-tuner Freeview (Digital Terrestrial Television) receiver and software bundle that allows you to turn your PS3 into a full-blown PVR, recording and playing back TV programs. PlayTV allows you to record one program whilst watching something else, and you can control it via Remote Play on your PSP too.

In addition, we heard the official announcement regarding Sky's joint venture with Sony which will bring on-demand programs and video to the PSP platform.

PlayTV launches in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France in 2008. Whether the Sky venture makes it's way to the PS3 is debatable - I can't see why Sky would allow their content on a PS3 that supports Freeview or vice versa.

Prediction Score - 10/10

Prediction 3 - "A 120Gb PS3 model for Europe instead of the 80Gb model they launched in the US."

Sony's David Reeves has said, whilst at Leipzig, that this is possible.

"The difference between 60 and 80GB is very small, we just feel that going up 20GB is not worth it," Reeves told Norwegian website Dagbladet. However, "If you go to double it, it's worth it", he added. "So maybe you'll see something a little bit later."

So whilst they didn't announce it at GC 07, there's a good chance this prediction will come true in the near future.

Prediction Score - 6/10

Prediction 4 - "Sony will announce at least six new exclusives."

David Reeves went on record saying that Sony were not going to launch any further titles at GC 07 because consumers are already anticipating a heavy few months and they can't necessarily afford any more titles right now.

And yet with the PS Eye they announced three new titles exclusive titles that are supported by the device! Operation Creature Feature, Trials of Topoq and Aqua Vita are all coming along soon.

However, they didn't announce the titles we expected and seem to be leaving them until the Tokyo Game Show...

Prediction Score - 2/10

Predictions 5 & 6 - "The PSP will get access to the Playstation Store/PS3 Friends/PS3 Chat" and "The PSP and/or PS3 will get a Skype client"

Whilst Go! Messenger is only for the PSP and it isn't by Skype, the PSP is getting a chat and messenger system that will make use of the Go! Play camera and a headset. In conjunction with BT, the PSP will become a viable VoIP solution.

I still believe the PSP will access the PS3 Friends system at some point, but it is sensible to make this interface with PlayStation Home for that functionality in the same way Phil Harrison showed use via mobile phone.

Prediction Score - 5/10

Prediction 7 - "Sony will launch a 'LinkedIn' or 'Facebook' style system"

They didn't announce anything like this. This will probably be serviced by the PC web-based interface to PlayStation Home that they announced at E3.

Prediction Score - 1/10

Prediction 8 - "SCEE will announce the SixShock controller. Or RumbleAxis. Or whatever you want to call it"

Also didn't happen. In an interview with GameSpot, David Reeves said that any rumours about this coming along are just that - there are no announcements regarding rumble now or expected any time soon.

Prediction Score - 0/10

Prediction 9 - "Sony will launch a PC client to access and chat with your Friends"

GC 07 was not about Home at all. Sony's strategy, it seems, is to split up announcements between E3, GC and TGS. This means that since all the Home announcements were at E3, we need to wait for any extra details - especially since they're still in beta right now.

However, we know from E3 that a PC web-based service will allow access to Home, and so therefore will allow access to your Friends via PC.

Prediction Score - 4/10

Prediction 10 - "Sony will allow you to live videoblog using a PSP with a GoCam! direct to your PS3 hard drive and consequently to your Playstation Home space"

Again, because of no Home news at GC 07, we're not sure. But since Go! Messenger was launched, it's not such a leap of faith to make it connect to the Internet like Go! Cam and send your stuff up to the PS3. Certainly, Go! Messenger has connectivity to other devices such as PCs build in, so I'm calling this one a fairly accurate prediction!

Prediction Score - 6/10

Not a bad score overall - check back for more GC 07 roundup news soon.

Latest UK release dates for upcoming PS3 AAA titles

In an attempt to add to the general level of joy that has been created by this week's GRAW 2 release, I thought it would be a good idea to get the latest release dates for the PS3 AAA titles I listed recently to help show how much we've got coming along in the next few months.

I got these by comparing the GAME UK and Amazon UK dates and picking the most pessimistic of the two dates. I've purposefully not gone to the rumour-mill or other news sites to pick up the latest 'guaranteed' dates (which rarely prove to be right, including my own past predictions!).

I'm also not saying these are the final dates for any of these releases. In any case, I still think this list is pretty close to the truth and will help you work out how much overtime you need to clock up to afford your favourite titles!

And in case you're not up to speed on these titles, you'll find video links against all of them - just click the [vid] link. Enjoy!

Haze is two games in one box

The PS3 timed-exclusive, Haze, is shaping up to be one of the big games of the year.

As well as blindingly fast and furious gameplay, Rob Yescombe if Free Radical explains in an interview with Destructiod that Haze is two games in one box, as the two different factions in the game have such different abilities.

Read the full article after the jump to see a complete list of Mantel and Promised Hand skills. The extra good news? All of the listed abilities will be available in multi-player...

New PS3-compatible Aibo on the way?

In a recent interview with Kotaku, Masaya Matsuura explains that we could see a new Aibo-like device in the near future, and that this device could be PS3-compatible.

Speaking to Kotaku, he explains:

"The engineers behind the Aibo are doing the PS3. We are talking about making something like the new Aibo."

Brian Ashcraft (the interviewer) asks if it will connect to the PS3. Because that's what he really wants: A robotic dog for his PS3.

"I don't know. Connection is not hard. I'm sure some engineer could do that."
And that's what I really want.

I lament the death of the Aibo. It came around at a time when I really wanted one, but couldn't get one for various reasons. Just when I'd got into a position where I could get one, Sony canned the whole project, including the QRIO as well.

Just imagine a robot that you can program via the PS3. A robot that can send pictures it 'sees' during the day to your PS3 photos folder. Photos that you could then vie via Remote Play on your PSP, or pictures that automatically upload to your Home space just as in the mobile phone demo shown at E3.

Imagine a robot that reacts to games because Sony supply designers with the API to tell the robot what to do via Bluetooth when you are playing. Or a robot that controls a game, or can even play Eye of the Beholder with you!

All these things, and much more than I've imagined, could all be possible. Please Sony - make this wish come true.

Here's a good reason to avoid Comic-Con

Despite the excellent showing of Eye of Judgement and the obvious fun of the Singstar competition, there was a really good reason not to go to Comic-Con this year.

For more of the same, and to see some even scarier adults dressed up as your favourite game characters, hop over to the official Playstation Blog...

E3 2007: 60 fps; now that's a 'quick draw'!

1875. In a small town called Santa Monica the Rapp Saloon saw it's fair share of Wild West action.

132 years later the 'big guns' of the gaming industry took their fight to town. Or so you would think based on all the 'Sony won E3', 'MS won E3' and 'Nintendo won E3' threads that pepper the 'net today.

E3 2007 is now over. And just to make things clear, I've seen all three major keynote speeches (before anyone says I can't be objective!).

I'll be honest, there's only one clear winner - us. Regardless of whether you're a 'fanboy' or someone who buys every console, or even someone just in-between, there's something for everyone.

I already covered the Sony keynote in detail and followed up with my thoughts on why Sony did a fantastic job. I think MS spent too much time talking 'figures', which is what they do best anyway, but we all need to remember they had a year of selling over PS3 and Wii so it's no great surprise they've outsold everyone to date. Nintendo had some fun stuff but personally I still see the Wii as more of a last-gen toy than a next-gen gaming or entertainment centre.

Here's a complete wrap-up of my thoughts about Sony's E3 and what it means for everyone who owns a PS3.

First of all, we need more games for our beloved black monolith. And Sony came with new games. Over the next 'financial year' we're going to see literally hundreds of releases on both Blu-ray disk and via the Playstation Store (that's before March 2008).

PS Store downloads will include the likes of Warhawk (also available on BD), Socom, Wipeout HD and Pain. The new puzzler Echochrome will have user-generated content (but no-one can say what or how yet). We know that via the Store you'll get more and more additional content for your existing games, extending their life and adding new features. We've already had additional game modes for Motorstorm but look out for new tracks and extra levels over the next month or so.

New games coming along this Summer, Autumn and Winter include Heavenly Sword, Assassin's Creed, Haze, Guitar Hero III, Rock Band, Killzone 2, Lair, Eye of Judgement, Skate, GTA: IV and Unreal Tournament III to name just a few. 100s of titles before March next year, 15 of them exclusive to the platform.

Secondly, we needed to see improvements to the Playstation network experience. When I first saw Home at GDC I was blown away. But I wasn't prepared for the vast improvements already when Phil Harrison took the stage at E3 2007.

Now, not only do we get the single best 'network' experience available on any platform, we get to interact with it via our PCs and mobile phones. Thanks goodness I only buy Sony Ericsson phones! And we get to launch games from BD or our hard drives directly from within Home with our friends around the world. The entire Home exprience looks so compelling, and it's still free. No monthly subscriptions for us PS3 owners...

When they do launch video-on-demand for the PS3 and PSP, we'll have everything covered.

Finally, we wanted to see that the pre-rendered 'target renders' we saw at E3 2006 were actually achievable.

And we did. Oh boy, we did.

Killzone 2 looks just incredible. I wasn't a huge fan of the original Killzone - it never really grabbed me. Killzone Liberation on the PSP has been one of the outstanding titles for our mobile brother and that has kept me interested in the Killzone brand since the original PS2 game. Now it looks like the PS3 has yet another stand-out title that will shift units worldwide, and I can't wait to waste some Helghast scum!

And Metal Gear Solid 4? The latest trailer showed that the PS3 is capable of producing, in realtime, the kind of cinematic content that ensure you really feel part of the action. I'll be looking out for that demonstration in Tokyo next week...

There were issues at E3, of course. Assassin's Creed didn't look like it was close to finished by all reports - too many glitches. Some people say that's because they felt pressured to get the demo up regardless, but the issues did create a little extra pressure for the PR machine.

And then there's the whole $100 price drop/60Gb phase out thing. It's all over the 'net as you'd expect and Sony's execs seemed to be tripping up over each other to state and counter-state differing points of view.

But here's the deal. Personally, I could care less about the 80Gb model. I already have a PS3. I can upgrade the hard drive in my PS3 to 160Gb tomorrow for £50 and it will take me 5 minutes. Anyone who is buying a new PS3 may as well have the new one with the larger hard drive, but it they want to buy the smaller one and add in a new hard drive, they can.

That's because Sony made the hard drive a standard SATA unit so it's easy to upgrade. Try doing that in any other console right now.

And the 80Gb version isn't coming to Europe/UK anyway right now. Hate to be all UK-biased, but that means I really couldn't care less about the new SKU!!

There you have it. A brilliant E3 for all of us whether you own a PS3 or any of the other units. I believe that Sony really did bring everything we needed to see from them and more. Don't expect to see a Wild West undertaker coming out of his store to measure Sony up for a box any time soon...

In the US? Want to pay LESS than $499 for your PS3?

PS3 Attitude's man in the US has found another way to get a PS3 for less than $499.

Though many developers have been complaining that Sony's recently reduced pricing for the PS3 isn't enough, sales would prove otherwise for the 60Gb model. Amazon posted a 2800% increase in sales of the PS3 within a day of the price cut. Other websites and retail stores across America are seeing the same trend. Many stores in the San Francisco Bay Area around me are sold out as of the moment the price dropped. I even found a few stores with employees that say they didn't even know the price dropped until the units they had in stock suddenly were sold right in front of them within seconds!

Well for those developer-disbelievers there is another price point they are overlooking. Its the refurbished market. Hop over to Overstock.com and you can pick up on a refurbished 60Gb PS3 for around $475.

That's right! A whopping $20 less than anyone else! But hey, now it's the same price as the M$ machine that will guarantee to break within 3 years.

I have to say this looks like a great deal. As we know, the PS3 is ridiculously reliable so getting a refurbished model that was probably just a return rather than a faulty box seems like a good idea. You can put the money you save aside for the forthcoming PS Eye...

Playstation Store content for Europe in July

Thanks to our friends at PS3 Fanboy you can now get all excited about playing Heavenly Sword before the end of the month in Europe.

The 'Fanboys' report the following list of available content for the Euro Store during this month:

  • Heavenly Sword
  • Crash Bandicoot 2 - PS1 game for PS3/PSP
  • Spyro 2 - PS1 game for PS3/PSP
  • Gateway to Glimmer - PS1 game for PS3/PSP
  • WipEout 2097 - PS1 game for PS3/PSP
  • MediEvil - PS1 game for PS3/PSP

They also report the possibility of a Blast Factor expansion, Snakeball and Feel Ski but aren't certain whether these will be coming to Europe and the UK in July (maybe August instead). Since Snakeball is going to be a PS Eye compatible title it's my guess it will only happen after the UK/Europe release of the hardware and Eye of Judgement.

As we know from the E3 liveblog there will be a new track for Motorstorm (Eagle's Nest) coming soon but PS3 Fanboy think the Coyote Weekend VIP Pass will launch in the not too distant future as well (not necessarily in July or August). With Warhawk, Echochrome, Socom, Pain and Wipeout HD on the way soon it's looking like the PS Store is the place to be...
