House of SingStar Singing Marathon

Give it up for Southampton, UK. About 50 brave souls will sing every SingStar song on the PS2 and PS3 discs in the order in which they were released. All of them. One after the other. Non-stop.

Before phoning the loony bin, hear them out (get it?). They are doing it to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The singing marathoners will be comprised of friends and family of the organizers, but we can all get in on the fun (and donate of course) through their website

In what may very well be one of the last words she will vocalize a-melodically for a long time, hostess Lucy Calvert commented:
Never have the words ‘I wonder’ led to such an undertaking. What started out as an idea to bring a group of friends together for a night of SingStar, has now turned into something much, much bigger. The support we have been receiving is fantastic and we can’t wait to get going.

Neither can we. It appears it is all about charity this month. First our own DolphGB jumped out of an airplane for GamesAid (spoiler: he made it), Rock Band offered the PAX Track Pack for Child's Play, and now House of SingStar sings their hearts out for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Never has September been such a good month for charity.

Jump 2008; I survived!

The first part of our big charity event, Jump 2008, is done and dusted.

Soon, I'll post a full write up of the day with photos and videos, but for now I just have one thing to ask.

I did this for a reason - to raise much needed funds for GamesAid, helping under-privileged and disabled kids get a break. Without your donations, the whole thing will have been just a challenge without a cause.

Use the button in the left sidebar to donate now using your credit card or PayPal account.

If every reader of PS3 Attitude can give just $5 (less than a round of coffees for you and your mates at Starbucks) you can all make a huge collective difference.

Two more new writers, anyone? Go on then...

In what will be the final announcement on adding new writing talent, following our previous two posts, we'd love you to place your hands in the air, and wave them like you just don't care, for two new authors.

Danny_D passed our 'describe yourself in 20 words' test with honours. He says he's "Ingenious, Animated, Meek, Diverse, Adamant, Nonchalant, Inventive, Extroverted, Lively, Entertaining, Steadfast, Psychedelic, Ambitious, Resourceful, Rambunctious, Alive, Gifted, Original, Zany, Abnormal."

We asked him about his favourite vegetable and he plumped for Broccoli. Really? Why so? "Because I never gave it a chance as a kid and now I can’t get enough of them little green trees". Being greedy, however, Danny_D also cited Asparagus because "it kinda sounds like my last name". If he could be any game character he'd be Rick Stalker from 1991’s Flying Warriors for the NES. "He’s a Kempo master that can change into superhero form (complete with costume!), use magic and fly around". Following the trend of being greedy with his answers, Danny_D also chose Quagmire from the Family Guy Video Game - only he didn't say why!

Our final author (for good, maybe?) is Phreaky. An easy going and chilled gamer since 1988, Phreaky "lives, sleeps and breathes games when not working or playing guitar".

Phreaky's favourite veg is tomato, because "it's versatile, tasty and the basis of my awesome bolognese". If he could be any game character he's be Yoshimitsu - "Great masks, great weaponry and always fighting the good fight".

So there you have it.

In addition to myself, our roster now takes in:

10 brave souls on a mission to deliver the best quality PS3 news to you daily. This also marks the increased globalisation of PS3 Attitude - from this point forward we'll be covering UK, Europe and the US. Our resident Japanese speaker, Brodiesan, will (I'm sure) be able to help us keep tabs on what's happening in Asia Pacific too.

Thanks to all our authors for donating their time and effort towards our PS3 Attitude Charity Fund. Make their day by clicking on the Donate Now button in the left sidebar - it's why they're doing this. Thank you.

Ask PS3 Attitude; Which charity do you support?

Q: I'd like to know to which charity you donate to. Asked by Elena

A: Thanks for getting in touch through our Ask PS3 Attitude feature...

This year, the PS3 Attitude Charity Fund is supporting GamesAid. GamesAid is the gaming industry charity.

GamesAid allocate the funds they raise to children's charity groups, so the money goes directly to help projects across the region support underprivileged or less-abled kids.

In January 2009 we will announce the recipients of next year's PS3 Attitude Charity Fund.

Ask DolphGB a question.

PS3 Attitude becomes 100% charitable; calls for designers, writers...

As you may know, we've been leading up to a major event - Jump 2008 - in order to raise much-needed funds for GamesAid. We really need your donations, so please use the Donate Now button on the left.

In addition you can buy T-Shirts and merchandise to help the cause, because the profits also go to the PS3 Attitude Charity Fund. This fund is distributed to the charities we support each year, and GamesAid are the first recipients.

Today we are announcing the biggest change in the website since it began. PS3 Attitude is now 100% philanthropic. Every single penny, pound, cent, euro and dollar we make from advertising, affiliate revenue, game purchases, merchandise, special events or any other income derived from the site will be put into the Charity Fund for distribution to one or more charities each year.

So we are asking for your help.

  • Can you donate some money towards our Jump 2008 event today? Anything you give will help under-privileged children across the country. If you want to donate on behalf of a company, please get in touch by emailing jump2008 [at] ps3attitude [dot] com.
  • Do you know how to design Classic Blogger templates and graphics? We need a redesign in order to maximise our fund-raising and we're asking if you - or anyone you know - can help us. Email us at designers [at] ps3attitude [dot] com.
  • Do you want to write for the site to help us create more original content? Original content brings the most visitors to the site, and we need more writers - especially in the US, Japan and across continental Europe. [UPDATE] We had an amazing response to this - thank you all so much. For now, we are no longer looking for additional writers...
  • Is there any other way you can help us? PR, marketing, fund-raising, events? Contact us at helpus [at] ps3attitude [dot] com.
We hope all our readers support our decision to go 100% charitable. The people behind PS3 Attitude are funding the site/hosting/time/effort entirely out of their own pockets in order to make this possible.

Look out for a temporary site re-design soon that reflects our new charitable status.

Here's a few more ways you can help:
  • Buy our merchandise - remember, every penny made goes to charity
  • Set up a site-wide link to PS3 Attitude on your games-related website
  • Tell your friends about this by clicking the email symbol at the bottom-right of this news post
  • Share our charity widget - click the Share button and add it to your website, blog, Facebook, MySpace or almost any online profile
Thank you!

Charity widget launched for Jump 2008; please spread the word

Jump 2008 is our big charity event for this year.

The people behind PS3 Attitude are going to be leaping out of a plane at 13,000 feet in support of GamesAid, the videogame industry charity. Fortunately, each person will be connected to one of the Royal Marines at Aldershot that have graciously offered their time and experience to the cause.

GamesAid raises money for various children's charities, and it is our pleasure to be amongst the first industry websites to put on an event that we are hoping will raise thousands of pounds.

So how can you help?

Today, we are pleased to launch the PS3 Attitude Charity Widget. It's probably the most important thing we've done here at PS3 Attitude, and we really need your help.

The 'Donate Now' button will take you to a secure form that allows you to use your credit card, debit card or PayPal account to help our cause. Remember, our lives are at stake here, so please give generously!

After you have donated, please help spread the word.

Click the 'Share' button in the bottom corner of the widget and you can add it to your social networking profile (such as Facebook, MySpace, Friendster or Bebo), your social bookmarking page (for example, Tagged) or grab the code to embed it on your blog and website.

The widget supports dozens of sites, so flick through all the options and please embed it wherever you have a presence online.

We would like to thank you all in advance for your donations and your assistance in spreading the word. GamesAid will help us make a positive difference to many children's lives, so please dig deep.

Jump 2008 takes place on August 31st. Once we have drawn a close to donations at the end of September, the widget will automatically update to announce the final amount raised. The widget is below and in the left sidebar of the site.

If you can think of other ways you can help us spread the word and raise money, please contact us at jump2008 [at] ps3attitude [dot] com. Thank you.

Jump 2008; PS3 Attitude Charity Fund and GamesAid

It's going to be a week of big announcements at PS3 Attitude, what with Haze Week starting from Monday, but we're going to get the ball rolling right now with our most important news yet.

You may have seen the news that GamesAid, the new UK video game industry charity, launches today. This new charity will focus on raising funds for children's charities, putting much needed funds into health, housing and social welfare projects.

PS3 Attitude are pleased to announce that we are one of the first industry websites that will raise money for this worthwhile cause.

Taking our inspiration from one of the PlayStation Store's downloadable games, on August 31st 2008 the people behind PS3 Attitude, plus a carefully selected crew of gamers and gaming industry contacts, will leap out of a plane at around 13,000 feet.

Fortunately, each person will be connected to one of the Royal Marines at Aldershot that have graciously offered their time and experience to the cause.

Starting today, PS3 Attitude will be running a 'call for jumpers' that will decide the final group taking part in the event. We, and the entire Jump crew, will then be running fund raising activities across June, July and August until the day of the event, which will be recorded for you to enjoy in the following weeks.

If that wasn't exciting enough, here's the fun part - YOU could be jumping with us!
Yes - we are offering PS3 Attitude readers an opportunity to join the crew for Jump 2008.

If you fit the bill, you can help raise money for GamesAid and tick off one of those 'things to do before you reach 50' achievements off your list. So how do you take part?

You need to be fit and healthy, and because it is a tandem sky-dive you need to weigh less than 14 stone. We will require every potential member of the crew to have a British Parachute Association form completed by their Doctor (who may charge for the service of filling it in; a cost you will have to bear).

You need to have a good network of friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances, because we will be targeting each crew member with the job of raising at least £1,000.

You need to be free on August 31st and be able to get to Aldershot.

Finally, you must be at least 18 years old.

If you feel you can commit to the fund raising target, that you are up for the challenge and that you're happy to invest a little money with your Doctor, send us an email with your full name, your address, your age and a paragraph or two about why you want to get involved.

We can only take a few people - spaces are limited - and if you are not chosen we will not be able to refund any money spent gaining your Doctor's go-ahead.

Send your details to jump2008 [at] ps3attitude [dot] com.

Look out for more Jump 2008 news soon, including details of how you can sponsor the crew and a range of widgets you can use with your website or social network profile to support the cause.

GamesAid charity launches tomorrow

New industry charity GamesAid launches tomorrow (May 16th), looking to replace the Entertainment Software Charity (ESC), which seems likely to disappear.

GamesAid arrives without specific fiscal targets or a rigid manifesto, but with an over-arching desire to include everyone from developers to retailers – and even consumers.

It has been established with seven trustees: Greg Ingham, chairman (MediaClash), Andy Payne, vice chairman (Mastertronic), Andrew Eades (Relentless), Paul Gardner (Osbourne Clarke), Sarah Seaby (GameCock), Rupert Loman (Eurogamer) and Miles Jacobson (Sports Interactive).

It is likely that the majority of monies will go to UK children’s charities – although, again, the trustees will look to the industry for guidance.

Look out for more GamesAid news tomrrow.

“It’s important to note that this is ‘an’ industry charity, not ‘the’ industry charity. We won’t be dictating, it’s about creating a broad-based membership which comes up with ideas and inspires each other.” - Andy Payne, GamesAid vide chairman.
