Firmware 2.70 brings chat, big files, media backup and status sorting – Updated

Welcome to PS3 Attitude. Why not Register for the site so you can start commenting and getting involved... use the Register option on the right of the page.

2.70 - just like 2.60 but with extra spicy saucePrescience aside, we’re just glad to see 2.70 finally raising its murky head from the Sea of Speculation so the wild predictions about its content can stop.

Fans of chat, sorting, huge attachments and media backup should prepare for a giddy frenzy.

The rest of you, and we’re thinking this is the majority, look away now. There’s nothing to see here.

As always, the ever-dapper Eric Lempel has materialised over at the official PS blog with a video guide explaining just what is in store for 2.70 upgraders. We’ve embedded the video for your convenience below, but for those of you that shun the devilry of moving media format, here’s the highlights in reliable textual format.

Friends

You can now sort your friends by their online status – which is handy if you have a veritable brigade of hanger-ons that are proving unruly under the confines of traditional alphabetical sorting. You can also now send these friends files of 3MB in size. Handy if … well, handy if the 1MB limit was historically troublesome for you.

Media

Video purchased for PSP can now be transferred to your PS3 for playback. Also, any video you’ve snagged off the PlayStation Store can now be backed up to an external device and restored to your PS3 if the need ever arises. We’re sure those of you who are finding space an issue will welcome this feature.

Chat

Leaving the best ’til last. Real-time text chat is now available with your PSN friends. Eric says it best by stating:

Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

That’s it. Not the paradigm shift some people were expecting. It also never fails to amuse us just what people believe may actually feature in a firmware update. The best rumour we heard was “Full backwards compatibility and your PS3 can interface with your Sony Kettleâ„¢ and make you coffee.”

Speaking of coffee …

Update: Our friends over at The Sixth Axis have noticed some other tweaks. Trophy comparison is now a lot faster and, rather than a shameful “0%” next to someone’s trophy haul, it now shows “-” if they actually don’t actually own the game in question.

An “estimated time remaining” counter is also present showing how much time you have to make a sandwich as your downloads wing their way to you from across the “internets”.

Finally, there’s scrollable windows in the Store now? Amazing what they can do with technology these days.

I’m actually a fan of the media file size increase and the text chat. Text chat for organising players for clan games, media file size for sending usefully large picture files (ie, photos) to mates. Not in the US, so the backup thing isn’t so useful now. Very happy that they continue to improve the thing though, it’s a _very_ good piece of kit :) .

These are all useful bits and bobs, but not the massive bombshell we were hoping for.

    I wonder what 3.0 will bring…? Cross-game audio/video chat? who knows…?

  • LCaruana says:

Yay for faster trophy comparison. Danny I’m keeping an eye on you! :-) The text chat could come in handy. (I don’t know if I could handle 3 chat rooms at once while playing a game, but hey it’s nice to know I could if wanted to) I need to get some coffee, wish it was already made for me. (Maybe 2.80 will add that functionality)

  • NickColley says:

This is a step forward, with the chatrooms they can work on voice and implement it nicely

  • whoelse says:

Lol, can’t believe that controller battery icon still overlaps the time.

    But a very good update.

I hope we can also write more text in our comments!
