DamnationScheduled for release on May 22nd, Blue Omega’s Damnation plans to turn the action genre on its head by introducing the concept of “verticality” to gamers.

It’s a bold move and one we’re looking forward to seeing in practice as players “climb ladders, swing on poles, use zip lines, flip up onto high ledges and dive through windows” in a steampunk inspired universe.

In a new developer insight video presented by Richard Gilbert and technical art director Carl Schel, the two “Blue Omegans” discuss the acrobatic stunts and dare-devil feats players will be getting to grips with next month.

Producer Gilbert claims:

“You can really intuitively navigate through the levels of Damnation as the game offers a degree of flexibility not available in other shooters. If you’re blocked by a gate and there’s a window right next to it, you don’t have to run around looking for a key-card, just dive through the window! It’s all about seeing a path and choosing to take it.”

Check out the video below for more footage and insights into the game. Apart from the obvious addition of the Y-axis, there’s also the drop-in-drop-out co-operative online play and innovative multiplayer modes that pique our interest.

Adding a new dimension to the traditional gameplay of running around on one level with adversaries usually only attacking from a single axis, Damnation’s “vertical twist” should present an interesting challenge.
