E3 09; Dragon Age: Origins Trailer
EA have been hard at work on Dragon Age: Origins.
If you were following our live blog of their event, you may recall that our man was there and commented on just how graphically violent this game is shaping up to be.
Not only that, but the language in the video soundtrack is as blue as the blood-drained corpses left in our hero’s wake. Consider yourselves warned…
Should we be put off by this level of gore and violence?
Of course not! It’s refreshing to have a console-bound game as dark as this.
The game is best described as an RPG based in the (clearly) fictitious world of Ferelden, and is being developed under the watchful eye of BioWare – the meticulous team behind Mass Effect, Star Wars: KOTOR and the magnificent Baldur’s Gate.
Suffice to say expectations are high.
You take on the role of a hero of the Grey Wardens, tasked with protecting the people and races of Ferelden. Betrayed by a General of the Wardens, you must fight through all the demons of the world to bring the man to justice. Needless to say that this paves the way for a jaunty tramp through all the corners of the land, looking for loot and vanquishing baddies as only a hero can.
With both over-the-shoulder and top-down camera options, the game is billed as a ‘spiritual successor’ to the Baldur’s Gate franchise. Considering the calibre of the team working on the game, this ought to be nothing short of incredible. Particularly give the grittier nature of the title – as the team themselves said:
Dragon Age: Origins is a very gritty, often bloody adventure with mature themes. It has elements of traditional fantasy like heroes, villains, and magic, but we’re not pulling any punches – you’re going to be immersed in a brutal, dangerous, and sometimes shocking world.
The feel of the many trailers for the game look a lot like a combination of Oblivion and a hugely popular fantasy trilogy involving hobbits.
Don’t believe us? Check out the trailer for yourself, then!
Dragon Age: Origins is due out in the later half of 2009, and is most certainly a day one purchase for a few members of the team.
