E3 09; Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Preview – Ayane Edition
Ninja Gaiden Sigma was one of the first must-have games on the PS3. The graphics were beautiful and the gameplay was spectacular. The game had its fair share of problems too, most notably, the camera angles. It’s good to hear, then, that Team Ninja has addressed this issue for the upcoming Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. The game takes everything that made the original Sigma good, and makes it better.
Sigma 2 boasts a slew of new material that the Xbox 360 version didn’t have. The game will include three new playable characters; Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel, along with new weapons, enemies, and for the first time ever, online co-op. Oh, and the camera angles are definitely being fixed. This isn’t just some port over to the PS3. No, it is much more than that.
We were able to see Ayane in action, fighting off some ninja soldiers. She is quick and deadly, just as in Dead or Alive. All the characters will have a variety of different weapons and with Ayane, you’ll be able to use her famous exploding flower shuriken along with her dual ninja swords.
The controls remain the same from Sigma so experienced players will have no problem jumping right in. Another thing that remains the same is the difficulty that the Ninja Gaiden series is known for. Playing as Ayane feels more like a intricate dance than a button masher. Enemies will rush at you; even when you hack their limbs off, they’ll keep coming.
All the characters will have their specific levels, much like Rachel did in Sigma. Not much details regarding the co-op mode was revealed but we did learn that players would be able to perform a special, dual Ninpo attack; one that is much more than both characters simply doing their individual one. DLC is also planned to bring more excitement to the game although we weren’t able to convince Team Ninja to tell us in what ways. It would appear that ninjas are immune to torture.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is a whole new game that will satisfy PS3 owners everywhere. Tecmo wants to develop the best games, with the best technology. That means they are shifting their focus towards the PS3 and with Sigma 2, it is definitely showing.
