Firmware update incoming
Welcome back. You're a regular here, so why not follow us on Twitter too...
The US PlayStation Blog have announced that we are getting a wonderful new update for our favourite feature-hungry black box.
Not only that, but it could be rummaging in the fridge, lounging on the sofa and generally making itself at home from as soon as tomorrow!
What shall this fantastical new update bring to our universe of online gaming, music and videos?
In the inimitable words of Eric Lempel, Director of PSN Operation:
Hello, I just wanted to provide everyone with a head’s up that the next PlayStation 3 system software update (v2.80) will be coming soon. The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.
So… nothing to really see here. Bummer, right?
We have to admit that we were hoping for something more sizeable with the new firmware. Monkeys, bananas, a houseplant. Something.
Maybe they are just building up to something really spectacular for the inevitable Firmware Update 3.0 (yes, it deserved capital letters – it ought to be epic).
Anyway, we’ll be having a close inspection of the firmware to see whether or not we can root out any hidden elements no-one else is going to have noticed. Let us know if you find anything strange or interesting lurking in the update.
Meanwhile, we’ll be enjoying the improved playback quality of some PS3 format software. Apparently.

No Cross-Game chat
Awww…. ok ill wait.
Please improve XMB in game, its soo slow atm
Really? I don’t think i’ve noticed this.
Its only on some games, When play Killzone and pressing XMB and trying to talk to some people on the group chat can result in crashing.
Just think it needs improving under those kind of circumstances.
I know what your on about, its only a few seconds but it can get annoying i think lol.
I would like to see some better communication options, cross-game chat etc..
Just give me playstation cloud and Im happy… for a while…
It’s here already!
I’m downloading it now!
What the heck is this “evony” nonsense “play now my lord” – you gotta me kidding me!
apart from a ‘turn off system button’ on the users line of the xmb can’t see much difference on-screen
Turk – turn off was there before. But i think that there are shiny new avatars – can you confirm this?
Oh, thanks. I had a quick look at avatars, couldn’t see anything new. Hang on..
nope, no new avatars, or none that stand out in any way
Bummer.
guess it was *just* minor tweaks then
Yeah, oh well, back to infamous!
Odd. I was on my PS3 earlier this evening and had forgotten about the update. My machine was online, so I’m a bit surprised that the update did not offer itself up!
Mind you, it does not sound like im missing anything!
Ducer
I went to the update button on the xmb and the system found it.
Problem is..
the 2.80 downloaded and installed earlier this evening and the system restarted.
later when playing infamous the system froze then shut down.
I restarted and the music, wavy line began to come on then the system beeped a couple of times and shut down.
Tried it again,samething.
powered down, pulled out camera, keyboard dongle, usb cables, restarted, got the green light – which then went flashing red and stayed that way until I touched the pad and it went red.
I’ve given up
I have the original 60gb version with all the slots and this is the very first time I have had any problems with the machine.
Any one have any solutions?
Any solutions?
If the problem persists contact Sony I guess.
And I don’t wanna sound like a old git but posting so many posts just saying Downloading etc is a bit unnecessary.
Damn, sorry to hear that mate. I wonder if the update was the cause. As of typing this I’ve still to update. Did not go on the PS3 last night (Thursday). Mine is also the one with 4 USB’s, and did have a 60GB drive. Hmmmm.
So, I done the deed and called Sony. They’re going to deliver a factory rebuild with new parts on Monday and take away the bricked one – for 145 quid – but at least its the orignal first issue type so we can play our PS2 singstar and Kingdom Hearts.
I suspect it was just a coincidence since my PS3 kicking the bucket is the rare exception. oh well!
Let us know you get on with the replacement etc. We have not had any problems, and I don’t think any of us have come across any problems with our machines at all – do let us know how you get on, either here or directly.
Incidentally, how were Sony to speak to? Were they aware of this issue, was your PS3 under warranty etc?
Wow! £145 sounds quite a lot of money to swap an out of warranty machine. I guess that’s half the price of a new machine now. Does the swap come with any warranty?
I always think the current warm weather tends to work the machine a bit harder, or at least the cooling side of things. Mine hits level 3 of cooling a lot quicker in this weather.
