Metal Gear Solid: Rising to use new engine; look better than MGS4

Welcome back. You're a regular here, so why not follow us on Twitter too...

Metal Gear Solid: RisingSpeaking on the Kojima Productions podcast, host Sean Eyestone revealed more than a few surprises regarding New Gear on the Block, Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

Though it’s nice to hear how the game will be handled by the “new blood” in Konami while the older crew take care of Peace Walker duties, it’s the somewhat bombastic statements about the graphics of the new game that may shock a few.

Though barely an infant in terms of engine longevity, the Metal Gear Solid 4 engine will not return for Rising. And before you snicker and suggest the reasoning behind this decision is simply because the 360 couldn’t handle it, Eyestone goes on to say that, not only are they building a whole new engine but how the game will have “better graphics” than MGS4.

“We’re redoing the engine from scratch, and it’s going to look amazing. It’s going to be a big project like Metal Gear Solid 4. The entire team is serious about making it look as good as possible on every platform.”

We’re not sure how this is possible but we’ll reserve judgment until we have something tangible to mull over.

Apart from claims of graphical superiority to previous games, Eyestone admits that he wasn’t too sure if people would notice how Raiden’s eye colour has now changed. As with every minute detail in the Metal Gear universe, the switch has significance and the fact that eye-patch looks like a bandana is not accidental.

Where does it say its going to look better than MGS4?

i doubt they can top metal gear solid 4. that game has amazing graphics!!

I’m surprised they’re building a new engine. That’s a whole lot of coding. I’m expecting major delays with it’s release.

This may be a controversial thing to say, but while MGS4 looked good, I actually don’t think it was a ’standout’, but rather just one of a number of top-tier PS3 games (along with Uncharted and KZ2, for example), and after seeing what Uncharted2 is doing, I’d be surprised if MGS:Rising couldn’t push the envelope as well. Of course, it’s all just moot – for me, even mediocre games (eg; SOCOM) look good enough this gen to draw me in, it’s the gameplay that will matter, but Kojima productions has a pretty good record, so touch wood they’ll be on the money :) .

But how can they top MGS4 graphics when Kojima said they were running out of space on the Blu-ray for MGS4?

    • FurryFreak says:

They ran out of space on a single layer 25GB bluray disc, so they used 50GB dual layer instead. A lot of space was taken up by uncompressed audio. The game is about 33GB in total so they still had room to work with.
