Gamescom09; Eidos and Square Enix confirm joint line-up
There’s at least one good outcome now that Eidos Interactive fits snugly under the wing of Square Enix – where we got two press releases in the past, we now get just the one cost-effective announcement in their place.
Confirming their joint game line-up for this year’s Gamescom, Square Enix and Eidos have revealed what games will be on show at the annual European expo in Cologne, Germany. And boy, it’s a doozy.
We love conventions. Whether it’s the glitz and glamour of E3 or the intimate technological wonders of Develop09, there’s just something about gathering a bunch of industry people together, plying them full of alcohol and trying to get them to spill something juicy about their up and coming properties. We’re looking forward to seeing what new details we can discover about the following titles.
Focusing on the PS3 editions in the plethora of games confirmed for the convention, we’ll get hands-on with the regrettably delayed but by no means forgotten Batman: Arkham Asylum, the ever-popular Final Fantasy XIII and new MMO Final Final Fantasy XIV, and, potential dark horse and possible surprise hit on the cards, Mini Ninjas.
The conference will also feature Front Mission Evolved. A collaborative venture between Square Enix and Double Helix Games, there’s nothing that says “over-the-top Japanese action gaming” quite like strapping yourself into a giant mech and going postal on your opponents. The latest edition in the Front Mission series will see war-machines referred to as “Wanzers”. We’ll skip the obvious joke.
Finally, and another title we’ve heard little about recently, we’ll get a new look at Square Enix’s Nier. Developed by Cavia Inc. and due out next year, Nier tells the tale of a crumbling world stricken by disease, darkness and horrible creatures. Players will take on the role of the eponymous Nier as he embarks on a quest to discover a cure for the Black Scrawl virus; a deadly pathogen his daughter suffers from. Aided by powerful allies and a mysterious book (we’ll also skip the obligatory Evil Dead joke)Â we’re promised that, within the world of Nier, “nothing is as it seems.”
You can check out more about Nier over at the offical site.
Gamescom 2009 takes place in Cologne, Germany from August 19th to the 23rd. We will be there will bells* on so make sure to check back regularly for constant updates.
*Bells not included.
