Heavenly Sword studio finds new publisher in Namco
Cambridge based studio Ninja Theory have announced that their next title, a secretive multi-platform game to be launched on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime next year, will be published by Namco Bandai.
Best known to PS3 fans for the launch title Heavenly Sword, this change of publisher marks the intention of the studio to widen its horizons and a return to working with Microsoft’s hardware. (Their Kung Fu Chaos title was exclusive for the original Xbox).
To this day, Heavenly Sword remains a spectacular and groundbreaking achievement despite appearing during the early and nascent days of Sony’s new console. Despite this accolade, however, many people took issue with either the game’s length or certain aspects of its gameplay. Whether it was the presence of QTEs or the fact that button-bashing could defeat pretty much any foe, Heavenly Sword didn’t resonate with gamers as much as Ninja Theory had hoped.
These shortcomings were reflected in the game’s reception with the majority of the game’s reviews noting that, though technically amazing, something just felt missing.
Moving on to new ventures, the studio are confident that with the support publisher Namco is famous for and the studio’s pedigree, gamers are in for a real treat next year. Nina Kristensen, co-founder of Ninja Theory states:
“This new project pushes our core strengths of rich story-telling, cutting-edge technology and exciting gameplay beyond anything we have created before. The support of Namco Bandai combined with the skills and talent we have nurtured over the years means that players are going to be in for a truly deep and memorable experience.”
We’ll keep an eye out for more details of Ninja Theory’s new title and keep you informed, as always.
