SOE talks MMOs; confirms 4th unannounced title in development
Speaking in a highly recommended interview over at Eurogamer, SOE’s John Smedley has waxed lyrical about the current state of MMOs with the genre’s impending explosion onto consoles in particular taking up a sizable chunk of the conversation.
What the SOE President also mentions is that, when it comes to commitment to the PS3 with respect to the MMO genre, SOE are unsurpassed. John says:
“We already have four titles in development, three of which we’ve already announced.”
The three games alluded to are Free Realms, The Agency and DC Universe Online, and though the existence of a 4th title is not necessarily new news, what is intriguing is Smedley’s other comments in the interview regarding certain segments of gaming that, up until now, have gone fairly unrepresented in the MMO universe.
Seriously, though, look at a strong franchise like GTA or Killzone. They’re diverse, and permeate well beyond their target audience. We don’t have that in online gaming, and that’s what I believe games like The Agency and DCUO are doing.
I mean, do you see many sports MMOs? They’re out there, but frankly, most of them suck.
Could SOE be furtively be working away on a sports MMO, something that might appeal to millions of fans of a certain sport?
What type of MMO would you like to see? Let us know in the comments. We’ve got John’s number. We’ll call him up and harass him with your ideas. Promise.
