PS3 had the best games of 2009 – Metacritic
This is the (actually quite easily proved) claim made by review aggregation site Metacritic.
The accolade is awarded to the console with the most review scores north of 90%.
It’s because of this particular metric that the PS3 takes the “best quality” award (its median score is 72%) with the PC coming in second despite having a higher overall average (72.5%). The 360 comes in third (70%) followed by the PSP (69%), the DS (69%) and, last-but-who-cares-we-sold-absolute-buckets, the Wii with 67%.
In terms of the top 10 games of 2009 – aggregated review score wise – it’s particularly pleasant reading to see the PS3 pull off the trifecta. Uncharted 2 takes top honours (96%), followed by Modern Warfare 2 (94%) and then Street Fighter IV (also 94%). The 360 version of MW2 is also in the top 5.
Much like the recurring argument over just what is the highest building in the world, depending on if you’re counting antennas and whatnot, (actually, this is now unequivocally solved, thank you Burj Dubai) a “winner” in this regard all depends on how you look at things.
After all, the 360 released over 50 more titles than the PS3 this year and had more positively reviewed titles (88) than anyone else. So, it’s all subjective.
What is abundantly clear, however, is just how bad a year the Wii had in terms of quality software released for the console. Metacritic states:
“The popular Wii platform had a poor year in terms of game quality, with critics liking just 28% of games released for the platform.”
