Technology is always changing and we’re continually looking for the next big thing in the industry. That next big thing appears to be 3D.
Announced at the 2010 CES, Kaz Hirai revealed during the Sony Press Conference that the PS3 would become 3D compatible this year.
At some point in 2010 there will be two firmware updates that will give the PS3 the power of stereoscopic 3D. Games will be the first to receive the update with movies following behind shortly.
With many films already making the jump to 3D, it’s becoming apparent that this technology is becoming more mainstream and less of a gimmick. You’ll still be required to wear goofy looking glasses and have a 3D capable TV as well.
Currently there is only one game that has been released in 3D but more are on the way. IGN demoed 3D versions of Avatar, Super Stardust HD, and even Gran Turismo 5.
Will it be enough to make 3D a permanent feature or will it forever remain as a gimmick? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Until I watched Avatar in 3D last night, I did think it was a gimmick. Now I can see how it can draw you into the experience. I’d love to try 3D gaming, but I very much doubt I’ll be able to get a 3D capable TV in the next few years.
3D has come too soon after HD. And with the credit crunch doing funny things to peoples spending habits I can’t see 3DTV sets flooding out of shops let alone being manufactured in sufficient quantity to merit a reasonable price so may as well write about the manned mission to Mars for all it’s worth.
What am I going on about?
won’t be rushing to get a new TV, but good to see that Sony is quick to adopt new technology and that all ps3 owners will have the chance to use it.
it didn’t work on “old” bravias? i have a 46kdl-w4500 and i don’t give more 2k$ for a new TV..
I’d love to try this!!! Pity 3D tvs will be so expensive
Gimme gimme gimme! I can’t wait. I don’t really care that I bought a new telly 18 months ago, I was almost immediately annoyed that I hadn’t bought big enough at the time, so now that I ‘NEED’ 3D too, well, it’s a foregone conclusion guys.
However, this may also be problem. Microsoft (that other console manufacturer who is also battling for our cash) are not in such an enviable position, having only HDMI 1.2 (I think that’s right), so meaning no 3D. Surely this must be a reason for Microsoft to release yet another version of their xbox, which is bound to include other newfangled wonders. Should this happen, then once again, they’d be releasing new updated tech, whilst we’re still running on our original kit (well I am!). Imbalance.
Ah, it’s just a worrying thought. Not that it makes much difference to me really, for I love my PS3, and will be happy as Larry (who ever he was)when all the 3D games and movies are here with us.
Gran Turismo is going to be shiny.
Motorstorm is going to be exciting.
Uncharted’s are going to be immersive, lush and beautiful.
Heavy Rain type games are going to be very good.
Hec, even the old style sideways scrolling platform games will have new life as the worlds they inhabit stand out a bit.
What are fighting games going to feel like? Mmmm!
Okay, if I had a magic wand and could make only five of my existing games 3D, they’d be as follows…
ModernWarfare
Uncharted
GranTurismo (it’s already working somewhere)
Wipeout (it’s already working somewhere)
and finally, maybe InfernoPool.
Any other wish lists out there?
I’m not entirely convinced.
Firstly let me say, i think it is good that Sony are pushing new technologies, and generally are a company known for pushing the technological envelope with good (PlayStation/DVDs etc), mixed (MD) and bad (Betamax) results.
It’s good that the PS3 is a piece of kit that is able to handle 3D gaming and films without the need for a hardware upgrade.
But as theturk said above, is this too soon? Many people will still be on their first HDTVs (myself included) and will not be looking to buy another (especially 3D ready) TV for another 5-10years. Are we going to have tech for (the majority of) people that don’t want it/aren’t ready for it yet?
I think there’s two ways this could go.
If everyone appreciates what the PS3 can offer, i.e. that it is ‘futureproof’ (to a degree) and you can experience future gaming (can’t believe we’re saying this so soon after ‘next-gen’ gaming) right now, then i think Sony will sell more units, which is obviously only a good thing.
But it could also go the other way, if people start to think Sony are investing in to (another) unnecessary technology and there’s no great uptake in 3DTVs and Sony could just be ploughing funds in to the mire.
To conclude, i think it is good that the PS3 as a piece of hardware can offer 3D gaming. Is it going to be utilised? Not sure. Should sony concentrate on this generation of games and new IPs? Well it’s a gamble.
I think i’ve rambled on a bit too much now, probably best to just walk away…
PS. On a side note, i’m in the process of buying a house that contains a fireplace that used to belog to Sir Howard Stringer! Is that a claim to fame or what?!
I’m no expert but since some HD works on transmitting alternate images really fast to be picked up by gizmo glasses then why can’t standard 720i and 1080i simply be used to transmit the 3D signal? Then any HDTV will be able to show 3D
Just as Freeview digital started off as bog standard and now there is 3D freeview on the way I strongly suspect that 3D technology will soon be available on standard HD.
Call me a sceptic but chances are this is already possible but those friggin’ manufacturers would rather have us buy yet another new TV.
Forget it, I’ll stick with my crisp new Bravia thank you very much and Sony (much as I love ‘em) can stick their 3DTV where the signal don’t broadcast.
My buddy and I were discussing the problems of getting 3D tech into the living room. We came to the conclusion that whilst there will the tech loving guys such as myself who will be waiting, wallet in hand, for the release of everything special, equally, there will be legions of fans who can’t justify diving in straight away. For those peoples, we expect there to be middle ware that can be employed to bring 3D to existing displays.
We assumed that the main issue is synching the active glasses to the display, so perhaps there’ll be a device that we put into the HDMI link between the PS3 and legacy panels. There’ll be a market for a £150 device that includes a pair of active glasses. I know that I’d consider it anyway.
