Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City announced for the PS3

It’s official! The previously exclusive content for Grand Theft Auto IV is heading to the PlayStation 3!
Many doubted that this day would ever exist. After all the rumors that have been debunked, the Episodes from Liberty City will finally be playable on a PS3 after all. This is no joke, Rockstar Games really confirmed it. Seems like the days of true third-party exclusives are coming to an end.
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City has been one of the most requested gameplay experiences by PlayStation fans, and we’re thrilled to finally bring the closing chapters of the GTA IV story from one of the biggest franchises in gaming to PS3,” said Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations, SCEA.
On March 30th, both episodes will be available on a single Blu-ray disc for $39.99. The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony will both hit the PlayStation Network on the same day for $19.99 each.

No doubt that this is good news, but in all honesty the game is nearly 2 years old and if I was spending $40 in march it would be going towards a certain other game *coughs*GOW3*coughs*

This has made my week. It does make you wonder why Microsoft paid so much money just for a timed exclusive though.
I’ve no interest in this whatsoever. I traded the game in after completing the story mode, and never looked back.
The only ‘positive’ I see is that Microsoft paid something like $50 million, and all for no apparent reason. For that money, you’d expect a permanent exclusivity deal, surely?
Really happy about this, massive GTA fan and own every single game (except the old top-down ones).

Very good game though, and it should be selling for very cheap prices.
Ah, ye of the ‘it’s gotta be new to be good’ school ;P. I was a big fan of the Sega Mega Collection, and nothing in that was less than fourteen years old. And these days, the relative difference in quality over time within generations is more due to game design than technical prowess. A new story using 2008 tech is still potentially great (hell, Ninty regularly flog off games based on pre-2005 tech, although the value of many of these past their nostalgia factor is limited – after giving Super Mario Galaxy a playthrough, I would argue it’s possible the second most overrated game of all time – /end Ninty rant – sorry, relatively disappointed new Wii owner, and I wasn’t even expecting that much!).
Although – from a sales perspective, I can see why MS ponied up the $50mn – releasing these now, in the middle of MAG, GoW3, FFXIII, BFBC2, Heavy Rain and a few others, when many folk have lost interest, means they’ll be missing out on millions of dollars in sales. I know I won’t be bothering.

Oh, it was fun alright, but the camera was _terrible_ – at one point, due to the way the camera worked, when I pushed forward with Mario it resulted in him running around in and endless circle! The camera’s failings, combined with the lack of camera control (when I’d been used to playing platformers with almost full control over the camera for the entire PS2 generation!) made the platforming a bit trial and error at times. For me, a great platformer is about building skill at platforming over the course of the game, but SMG seemed more about adding gimmick after gimmick, without developing any of them overly much – there were very few moments where I had that ’sweet spot’ feeling I’ve had in so many other platformers. That’s not to say it wasn’t fun, but in all honesty, and when I really wanted to enjoy the game (I’d just bought a Wii, after all, and wanted to enjoy it!), it was an average title for me, and the reviews I read seemed to be oblivious of the far more accomplished platformers released in the five years prior to SMG. I had more fun playing the original Jak and Daxter (although not the two sequels, which suffered from trying to do too much) and all the R&C’s except Gladiator (noting that the spherical worlds in R&C were done far better than those in SMG). Or, indeed, the original Sonic the Hedgehog! It’s still a good game, but if you break down the technical elements of design and gameplay (highlighting the camera, which is pretty important for a platformer), not to mention animation, physics, visuals and sound (it wasn’t even fully voiced – despite probably only having a few hundred lines max! I can’t believe Ninty’s fans let them get away with that), SMG comes it at the level of ’solid PS2-era platformer’, unless you add the x-factor of “everyone really wants Mario to succeed after a poor showing on the Gamecube” nostalgia factor. And given that our solid, PS2-era platformer got an average metacritic review of 97, it’s pretty fair to say it’s overrated. Not bad mind – I’d probs give it a score of 80-85%, still a good game – but best game of 2007 I think not (Indeed, the R&C that released that year had better platforming, better camera, actual camera control, full (and quality) voice acting, better level design and a whole bunch of gunplay and Clank-only levels to mix it up as well).
Also – nothing personal against you Folken – I’m a new Wii owner, and after what I’d heard of it, the actual experience of playing the Wii (at least, if you’ve already played PS3 and a bunch of Eyetoy) exposes how far Ninty has fallen behind the leading edge of game design.
I think M$ have made their money count in the amount of console sales with the promise of “exclusive” content and achievements (no trophies on release). Remember how big the launch was?
