GAME to cut 247 jobs

Submitted by on Friday, 26 February 20107 Comments

The Game Group have announced it intends to cut 247 jobs, affecting 43 sites around the country.  Both GAME and GameStation stores will be hit, as well as the smaller GAME concessions in Debenhams stores.

Did The Game Group bite off more than it could chew?

A lot of people weren’t happy when it acquired GameStation.  There were fears that any semblance of competition would be completely destroyed by this retail giant, and independent shops would fall.

It didn’t pan out like that, with game prices remaining stable, and trade in prices remaining ludicrously low.  However, what did happen was complete market saturation.

Step into any UK city and it’s highly likely there will be at least two GAMEs and a GameStation within a two mile radius.  We always wondered how these stores managed to remain profitable – it turns out they weren’t.

In a statement, The Game Group had the following to say;

“We regularly review our entire store portfolio, including our concessions, to maximise the opportunities to reach customers while also ensuring that the business is running as effectively as possible.

As a result of this review process, and the tougher market conditions that we face in 2010, we have announced our intention to close 12 Game stores, 6 Gamestation stores, and all 25 of our concessions in Debenhams stores. In each location, we have detailed plans to support the customers and employees.

With deep regret, we have had to offer redundancy to 247 employees. We will do our utmost to redeploy roles if possible, and have started consulting with all affected employees in the 43 sites.”

Whilst it’s never nice to hear about job losses – and Team Attitude wish those affected luck – we can’t help but feel that this situation could have been avoided, or at least lessened, had there been some forward planning during the GameStation acquisition.

Most Cities can’t support multiple video game outlets – and unfortunately GAME’s reputation has nosedived in recent years, meaning more and more people are choosing their local independant store.

So, PS3 Attitude Public – do you ever shop at GAME or GameStation?  Would a shop closure in your area hit you?  Or have independent shops and online retailers scratched your gaming itch?
