PS3 source code found in Mass Effect 2?
It has been reported that some people delving into the source code of Mass Effect 2 have made an interesting discovery – could it be a version of the game exists for the PS3?
If there is a game series that most PS3 owners wouldn’t mind a port of, it has to be Mass Effect.
The original game - and it’s recently released sequel - have received rave reviews and sold in their millions. It seems fans can’t get enough of the RPG/Shooter mechanics, as well as the many well fleshed out characters and massive universe to explore. We know we would like a piece of that!
The source code from the PC version of the game apparently reads;
[SFXGame.BioSFHandler_CharacterR?ecord2]
m_nMaxRenegade=1900
m_nMaxParagon=1957
m_srXPFormat=340881
m_srSpendTalentPointsMessageXBox?=348754
m_srParagonRenegadeMessageXBox=3?48755
m_srSpendTalentPointsMessagePC=3?48753
m_srParagonRenegadeMessagePC=348?755
m_srSpendTalentPointsMessagePS3=?348755
m_srParagonRenegadeMessagePS3=15?3007
Note how the Xbox and PC are listed, and then underneath it mentions the PS3.
As promising as this seems, we have a big wet blanket that might smother the hype fires.
A couple of clever clogs at Attitude Towers have pointed out that Mass Effect 2 is based on the Unreal Engine, which is cross-platform, and that explains all the PS3 references in the source code.
BioWare confirmed this earlier today, saying;
“Unreal Engine is cross platform, hence the PS3 code. This was brought up back in Mass Effect 1 days as well. Mass Effect is for the PC and Xbox 360.”
While this doesn’t bode well for PS3 owners, Team Attitude are still holding out for a Mass Effect announcement in the next few months.
If EA would release a compilation disc featuring Mass Effect 1 and 2 we are fairly sure it would sell a few copies – ah go on EA, you’ve got a whole 50GB disc to play around with.
