Jack Tretton ridicules Natal and confirms Killzone 3

Submitted by on Saturday, 20 March 2010No Comment

One thing is for certain, when Jack Tretton is let loose near a microphone, us writers usually end up with something to write about. In a recent interview with Gamestrailers TV, the SCEA boss suggested that if people really wanted to “play about with cameras”, they would be better off buying a PS2 and an EyeToy. Take that Microsoft…

It’s the latest example of verbal sparring between the bosses of Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. Each are determined to promote their motion sensing technology by insulting the competition. The gist of Tretton’s comments were that with the PlayStation EyeToy, Sony had already sailed the seas that Microsoft are about to traverse with Natal:

“If you really want to get involved in playing with a camera I suggest you go out and buy a $99 PlayStation 2 and play some of the great technology we invented eight years ago,”

Tretton’s doesn’t quite match the humour of the already infamous Kevin Butler advert when it comes to insulting the competition. It is another example of Sony’s PR strategy for Move, which is to play down the innovation of Natal while playing up the functionality of Move.

“We’ve kind of been looking for the right opportunity to bring motion gaming in a PlayStation like experience. We really feel that with the right combination of the PlayStation Eye and our Move controller we’ve really got the opportunity to bring realistic gaming with motion to consumers for the first time.”

Aside from all this childish bickering, Tretton came out with an exciting piece of news by confirming that Killzone 3 is definitely on its way.

“We own Guerrilla Studios and they did a great job on Killzone 1 and 2 – I don’t know when you’ll see any announcements about it but I can promise you a Killzone 3.”

This isn’t exactly a surprise, anyone with half a brain could guess that Sony would look to cash in again on one of their best franchises. Yet, it’s still nice to hear Killzone 3 being confirmed. We suspect E3 will bring about more details on what to expect from the next iteration from the Killzone series.
