Top 10 Animals in Video Games

Submitted by on Friday, 26 March 2010No Comment

We love animals in Video Games. Well, most of the time. Thats why its time to celebrate the best animals in games.

Covering PS2 and PS3 games, this list notes the most memorable animals in games so far.

Here they are from 10 to 1:

Cerberus – Resident Evil

This one... doesn't need anything. Except your leg maybe.

This beastie was the cause of many pairs of brown pants over the world. Different to the normal Zombie Dogs in Resi, these Dobermans were intentionally infected by the Umbrella Corporation. So any lawsuits to replace that underwear should go straight to them.

Alsatian – COD4

All it needs is the moon in the background.

Other canines in the videogame world are these vicious Alsatian attack hounds. Trained by the Russian Ultranationalists, they wold tear your throat out unless you pressed R3 at the right time. If only all things in life were that simple.

Dogmeat – Fallout 3

Dogmeat. Now with added 'aliveness'.

A friendlier dog to cross your path was this post-apocalyptic survivor. Found guarding the door to Phil’s house in Junktown, Dogmeat could be recruited to your party if you played your cards right.

Little Gray – MGS4

“If you had a million Shakespeares, could they write like a monkey?"

This monkey was the companion of Drebin 893, the arms dealer in MGS4. With an unhealthy addiction to Narc Soda and cigarettes, Little Gray was originally added to the game because Drebin 893 was too bland by himself. Since Raiden’s motion actor (Eiji Morisaki) did a good impression of a monkey, they added Little Gray.

Monkeys – TimeSplitters

"The reality of Halo: Master Chimp"

These monkeys were more of an annoyance than a companion in the TimeSplitters series. Used in humerous ads for the games, they were quite small and hard to spot. Their melons were quite explosive too.

Chickens – Ratchet and Clank

One humerous weapon in the original Ratchet and Clank game was the morph-o-ray, which turned enemies into harmless small animals. The animal varied from game to game, going from the Sheepinator in the second game, to the Chimp-o-matic in their most recent outing.

Daxter – Jak and Daxter

Orange Lightning? More like Orange Whining.

A mix of Otter and Weasel (Ottsel), Daxter was the annoying, loudmouthed sidekick to Jak. Cursed to spend the rest of his life as an Ottsel after falling in a vat of Dark Eco, Daxter was originally the same species as Jak, with long pointy ears. Daxter spends most of the series complaining, whining and getting into trouble.

Chocobo – Final Fantasy

Big Bird, before the genetic mutation.

These lovably oversized Big-Bird/ostritch hybrids are the staple creature of the Final Fantasy series and a great mode of transport in areas with little/no technology. They’re so cute that Sazh even has a baby Chocobo in his afro!

Amaterasu – Okami

Kratos' less emotionally scarred dog.

Okami saw you playing as Amaterasu, a divine wolf goddess on the hunt for 13 divine brush techniques in order to save the world from evil forces thought to be vanquished 100 years prior. Amaterasu could influence and interact with the world by painting on it. Yes, by painting on it. I mean, who comes up with this stuff? Oh right. The Japanese.

Agro – Shadow of the Colossus

No, he's behind you.

This beautiful black steed was your only company in a country inhabited by giant, living, stone statues. Quiet and obedient, this horse’s name was the only word you needed to say (or shout) throughout the entire game.
