HBO content not coming to PAL territories

Submitted by on Wednesday, 26 May 20105 Comments

While our American readers can enjoy quality programming such True Blood, Entourage and Flight of the Conchords – thanks to a new partnership between Sony and the premium cable-television network, HBO – us here in PAL territories won’t be so fortunate.

We contacted SCEE to ask if there was any chance that we would be getting similar treatment, either by bringing the HBO deal over the North Atlantic Ocean or through a similar deal with another provider. Sadly the answer was a confident no.

In 2005, the HBO Mobile wireless service launched via Vodafone in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and South Africa, and via SK Telecom in Korea in 2006. In 2006, HBO’s SVOD service, HBO On Demand, launched in Israel on Jasmine TV, marking the first HBO stand-alone service offered outside the U.S. The service was launched in the UK in 2007 via BT Vision, TalkTalk TV and Virgin Media.

HBO is no stranger, therefore, to doing deals to extend their reach outside of the US, but as of this time SCEE have no plans to bring HBO to the UK. We felt it was doomed from the start, but it’s good to ask.

So Americans, this one is all for you. We’ll just stay in a time warp and continue buying boxsets. TV shows on a physical format? That’s so 90s.
