Killzone 3 will have 3D and jetpacks – and Naughty Dog are collaborating

The last 24hrs has seen the internet become awash with Killzone 3 news after scans made it online from the upcoming GamesPro issue which featured exclusive details.

It’s no secret that there will be a Killzone 3 coming at some point – SCEA boss Jack Tretton said so himself – but we’re now starting find out more information, and we’re getting very excited indeed.

First of all, the game will support 3D. This news has been banded around for a while so it comes as no surprise. There has been some concerns that it would feel tacked on, but the 3D is said to be a “game changer” so hopefully that will help alleviate these concerns.

Guerilla Games received many plaudits for the visual spectacle of the second game, but one of Killzone 2’s main criticisms was that the world was very grey. Sure, it had some of the best looking grey buildings on the PS3, but it was still a sea of grey nonetheless.

Guerilla appear to have taken note of this criticism and for the third game there will be “diverse locations” including Arctic levels. We suspect these splendid landscapes of pure white snow won’t stay looking serene for too long – not once we start staining the snow with Helghan blood.

Snow is a hard element to get right in games, many have tried but few have truly succeeded. Maybe this is the reason why Naughty Dog will be helping Guerilla with the game’s engine. We don’t know how much involvement they will be having at this stage, but any help from the Uncharted developers can only be a good thing. They do make good snow effects.

The game is said to give you the feeling of being in “a place far away from home, outnumbered by people who want to kill you”, and the scale is set to be bigger. It will tell us more about the Helghast; we will learn about their culture – even their language – and the game will show that they still have some humanity left.

The game will also feature Jetpacks – a surprising addition to the gameplay. The idea sounds clunky and awkward, but they are said to be “surprisingly lightweight and agile, Killzone 3’s jetpack is easier to maneuver compared to the sluggish incarnations of the gadget found in other games.” We’ll hold fire on this one, but it will certainly add a new dimension to the game.

Killzone 3 is said to look very complete and we’d be surprised if we don’t find out more at E3. This is definitely one to watch.
