The PS3 adds a bit of MUBI to your life
When Sony told us the PS3 only does everything, they really weren’t kidding. Today they have announced that ‘MUBI’ will be coming to your console sometime soon.
That’s great – but what is it?
MUBI is a movie streaming service. Whilst that conjures up images of Transformers and the like, the movies will actually be what are described as the best of international cinema. Art house and independent releases are what’s on offer here.
The Coen brothers, Godard, Kitano, Almodóvar, Tarantino and Van Sant – if any of these names rings a bell then you should be getting very excited. The emphasis is very much on quality over quantity.
A post on the PlayStation blog read as follows;
“We’ll bring you exclusive online premieres, collaborations with international film festivals, and retrospectives of some of the best cinema the world has ever seen.”
Sony plans to have 300 films ready to go when MUBI launches this autumn. The initial launch will be in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Iberia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, Nordic countries, Australia and New Zealand.
A required taste certainly – but something that will really cement the PS3′s position as a true multi media hub.
