FirstPlay Thursday – Week 10

Submitted by on Thursday, 10 June 20102 Comments

FirstPlay has been with us for a few months now and it’s really starting to get into its stride, with great content appearing every week. But what can you find in this week’s episode?

Can you believe there have already been 10 episodes of FirstPlay? This week’s episode includes a huge selection of treats for your viewing pleasure, including a review of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, a preview of Japanese shooter Quantum Theory, and the first screenshots of Call of Duty: Black Ops.

More importantly, there’s also Aero Racer (formerly known as Rocket Racing), the last of the four free minis, in the Featured Downloads section. If you’ve missed any previous episodes, but still fancy snagging a minis title for 99p, then episodes 7-9 are still available on the Store, and include Echoes, Blast Off, and Age of Zombies, respectively.

As always, this episode can be purchased for 99p, or you can save some money by taking out a 90-day subscription for £8.99.

Download size of Episode 10 = 1208MB

The complete contents of this week’s episode are as follows:

HD Reviews and Previews

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands review – excellent platforming with mediocre combat – 7/10 – check out the PS3 Attitude review here

Backbreaker preview – realistic physics, but with no official NFL teams

Quantum Theory preview – Japanese take on a Western shooter

The Descent: Part 2 Blu-ray review – pointless, not-as-good-as-the-original sequel – 5/10

Network Highlights

Best of PSN – a look at some of the latest content available on PSN

  • Heavy Rain Chronicles: The Taxidermist – short but sweet
  • BioShock 2: Sinclair Solutions Test Pack – level increase + new challenges = good for fans
  • Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West – the poor man’s Red Dead Redemption
  • Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse – funny, but clumsy and tragically stuck in the 80s
  • Magic Orbz: Jungle Pack – decent DLC for Creat’s fun 3D take on Breakout

Video Store Round-up – a look at some of the best movies on the Video Store

  • Friday Night Lights – a modern classic
  • Avatar – just as good in 2D at home as it was in 3D at the cinema
  • Law Abiding Citizen – the most incorrect film title ever
  • Gomorrah – grim watching, but essential Italian crime drama

Just Cause 2 Easter Eggs – the secrets of Avalanche’s sandbox shooter (not even we had seen some of these)

ModNation Racers Top Tracks – made a track you’re particularly proud of? Send FirstPlay a message about it, and you could be featured in a future episode (if it’s any good) – check out the PS3 Attitude review here

Screenshot Galleries

Call of Duty: Black Ops – could this be the Apocalypse Now of video games? It certainly looks promising

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West – Heavenly Sword was good, but this is looking great

Front Mission Evolved – you can never have enough wanzers

Tron: Evolution – could this be the best movie tie-in ever? Well, the bar isn’t exactly high, so anything’s possible
