Mortal Kombat announced; features 2D gameplay and the most gruesome fatalities ever
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment just announced that Mortal Kombat is coming to the PS3 in 2011. The game is being developed by NetherRealm Studios, a newly renamed studio that is led by Mortal Kombat’s creator Ed Boon.
The best part? 2D gameplay is back! The new Mortal Kombat will feature some of the most gory and gruesome fatalities ever seen in the franchise, powered by a new graphics engine.
Oh, but there’s more. In addition to 1 on 1 kombat, there is now a tag team mode with support for up to four players. You can also team up with a friend in the new co-op arcade mode. And yes, you can play tag team battles online!
Mortal Kombat will supposedly have “the deepest story mode of any fighting game”. Right…
“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”
This is actually exciting news. Mortal Kombat was at its best when it was 2D. It’s great to see that the MK team is reinventing the franchise, all while attempting to innovate at the same time.
