Red Faction: Armageddon announced – coming March 2011

Submitted by on Monday, 7 June 20104 Comments

It has just been announced by THQ that Volition are currently working on the next game in the Red Faction series, entitled Red Faction: Armageddon, which has a tentative release date of March 2011.

In Armageddon, you play as Darius Mason, grandson of Red Faction: Guerilla characters, Alec Mason and Samanya. Set fifty years after the events of the previous game in the series, the surface of Mars has been declared uninhabitable, and the human colonies are forced to venture underground to survive.

The twist is that Mason accidentally releases a ‘long-dormant evil’, resulting in the ‘Armageddon’ of the title. Therefore, unlike in previous games, you won’t just be fighting fellow humans, but rather what appears to be the indigenous life on Mars; or to put it another way, Martians.

Volition promises ‘new, groundbreaking challenges’, as the player explores the ice caves and lava flows of underground Mars. The developer also mentions ‘never-before-seen physics-based weaponry that redefines gameplay in the shooter genre’. Big statements indeed.

Judging by the trailer, it all looks rather Dead Spacey to us (except of course with Red Faction’s trademark destruction), but we’ll have to wait and see if Volition can match the atmosphere of Visceral’s acclaimed survival-horror series. As always, stick with PS3 Attitude for more news as we get it.
