FirstPlay Thursday – Week 17

Submitted by on Thursday, 29 July 20103 Comments

FirstPlay has been with us for a few months now and it’s really starting to get into its stride, with great content appearing every week. But what can you find in this week’s episode?

There’s a round-up of reviews this week, with Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4, Transformer: War for Cybertron, and Toy Story 3, all of which are surprisingly good. Other notable games in this episode include Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and inFamous 2.

A new feature makes an appearance too; in Personal, a member of the FirstPlay team (or, in possible future episodes, a viewer), talks through their own experience of a game of their choice. This week, Nathan Ditum speaks about his first playthrough of Heavy Rain (let’s just say he made some pretty dubious decisions).

As always, this episode can be purchased for 99p, or you can save some money by taking out a 90-day subscription for £8.99.

The complete contents of this week’s episode are as follows:

HD Reviews and Previews

Review Round-up – it’s licensed games galore this week, but wait, don’t make that face just yet!

  • Transformers: War for Cybertron – proof that licensed games can be half decent if they’re not movie tie-ins – 7/10
  • Lego Harry Potter: Years1-4 – we refer you to our previous comment – 8/10
  • Toy Story 3: The Video Game – oh, we stand corrected; movie tie-ins can be good! – 8/10

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood preview – new weapons, lots of destruction, and online multiplayer means that Renaissance Italy will be well worth returning to

The Future of 3D feature – it’s a little ironic that this obviously isn’t in 3D, but it’s still a nice little feature about Sony’s vision of a 3D future

Exam Blu-Ray review – an excellent character-based psychological thriller – 8/10

Network Highlights

Best of PSN – a look at some of the games you may have missed

  • Hamsterball – a fun Super Monkeyball-alike
  • Planet Minigolf – an addictive, yet far from perfect, arcade golf title – check out the PS3 Attitude review here
  • Fret Nice – annoying music and fiddly controls aside, this guitar-controlled platformer can be fun in small doses

Minis Round-up – another look at the saviour of the PSP

  • Supermarket Mania – slightly better than working in a real supermarket
  • Tehra: Dark Warrior – a great-looking, tough-as-nails God of War-alike
  • Gold Fever – fun for about ten minutes
  • Snake Warriors: Training – a selection of Snake-themed mini-games (which aren’t that fun and are probably free on the internet)
  • Vibes – an almost nauseatingly bright rhythm action game that’s well worth a play

Online Preview Round-up – a look at the games you’ll be playing online later this year

  • Medal of Honor – the overall presentation is seriously similar to Modern Warfare, so it’s no surprise that it’s looking strong – check out the PS3 Attitude preview here
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops – balanced perks means multiplayer will be less annoying than Modern Warfare, but there’s no word on whether the Zombies mode from World at War will be returning
  • DC Universe Online – Justice League or Legion of Doom? Man, that’ll be a tough decision
  • Gran Turismo 5 – the social aspect of GT5’s online functionality means that it could genuinely be better than the real thing
  • Twisted Metal – basically the complete opposite of GT5’s silky smooth presentation, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, assuming you’ve got a thing for clowns and ice cream vans

Personal: Heavy Rain – FirstPlay’s Nathan Ditum talks us through his own experience of Heavy Rain, in this brand new feature – check out the PS3 Attitude review here

Screenshot Galleries

Homefront – the whole ‘broken America’ focus looks a bit Falloutish to us

inFamous 2 – Sucker Punch’s claim that inFamous 2 can compete with Uncharted 2 might not just be talk

Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Lord of the Rings goes all Dragon Age (not a bad thing)

Neverdead – it’s almost worth downloading this episode of FirstPlay just for the final screenshot in this gallery
