InFamous developer: ‘we made dumb decisions’
Chris Zimmerman has been speaking frankly to Play about what went wrong and how the sequel will be much better.
Zimmerman drifts into tech speak when describing the problems but, from what we can gather, the issues came down to them doing the equivalent of playing their PlayStation on a big HD TV but through a scart lead.
“We made some really dumb decisions in the last game, but we’ve managed to fix them. It was pretty early on that we knew what we weren’t doing in inFamous that we needed to do in inFamous 2, but we had to tear a whole bunch of stuff up and put it back together. In technical terms the biggest thing that we’ve done is migrate a much larger part of our code to run on the SPUs. The PS3 has this elaborate architecture where there’s a whole bunch of different places you can have your code run and we had it all running in the slow part.”
At least he’s honest. Now that Sucker Punch has taken inFamous out of the slow lane, they can really show off the game. Zimmerman is very confident that the team will now be maximising the PS3′s hardware this time round.
“If you look at games like Uncharted 2 that’s a game that you actually can’t do on Xbox no matter how clever you are, there’s just more processing power on the PS3, inFamous 2 is going to be the same way. You’ll look at it and see that there’s no way we could have done this game on 360.”
As well as offering a shinier, faster and more impressive inFamous experience, the team have been working on Cole’s imagine. The hero has lost his scruffy look and is now looking much more attractive, he’s clearly been reading Men’s Health. Personally, we prefer the old grittier look.
