BetaRooms; Hands-on with the Move
If you didn’t get a chance to attend the weekend, then go to our Flickr page and look out for some videos in the near future. First however, lets take a look at the Move.
Sports Champions – Table Tennis
What some may brand as the PS3 equivalent of Nintendo’s Wii Sports is actually a far more in-depth collection of sports games. While the WiiMote only allows the player to mimic the actions required, the Move allows for a much more precise experience, the controller conveying every turn of the wrist and rotation of the bat on the screen.
We found Sports Champions, after the tutorial, to be engaging and a lot of fun, especially when played with another person. Rather than luck-of-the-draw, you need to rely on actual skill with the controller in order to win, something which could only have been achieved with the Move.
There are also other games included in Sports Champions: Disc Golf, Gladiator Duels, Beach Vollyball, Archery and Bocce; more of which will be revealed in the future.
Kung Fu Rider
Kung Fu Rider is a fun, quirky game where you use the Move controller to navigate downhill courses while escaping from the Yakuza. On a desk-chair. All bizarre notions aside, it makes for a good platforming game.
Rather unlike Sports Champions, which uses precise tracking to relay exactly what you do with your controller, Kung Fu Rider uses simple gestures like ‘upwards flick’, ‘thrust forward’ and ’tilt backwards’ to control the in-game character which makes it quick and easy to learn, but doesn’t detract from the gameplay experience.
However, it wasn’t perfect. Steering with the Move was slow. Its too easy to steer too far and crash into the wall, but try and compensate, and you end up overcompensating. It makes you feel like you’re steering through treacle, and you have barely any control at all.
If Japan Studio can clean this up a bit in time for release then it should be a strong release title for the Move. Textures and characters look great, and things look clear even when flying towards you at high-speeds, but in it’s current state, it feels a little unfinished.
Imaginatively titled, this is a pretty straightforward game. Requiring 2 Move controllers, one for each hand, you take control of the fists of a fighter against a Vinnie Jones lookalike. Moving is automatic, as is aiming. All the player needs to focus on is aiming their fists at the opponent’s head.
There are other tactics of course. Once you get used to the motion, you can start to block punches and approach the opponent in other directions.
The Fight is a good game. Punching feels good and the auto-aim/move system works very well, always keeping the opponent in view for a fight. In fact, the only thing that might put people off is the fact that you need 2 controllers to play.
Heavy Rain Move Edition
This was by far the most exciting game for the Move. Having played the original release, the Move controls were, for the most part, self explanatory. There were only a few symbols where it was confusing as to which direction the controller was meant to be thrust, but once learned, never forgotten.
The Move controller only heightens the immersion you feel in the game. While the quick time events in the normal edition made for exciting gameplay during fights, the feeling is amplified tenfold with the Move. Needless to say, if you’re getting the Move, you’re getting Heavy Rain.
Our time with the Move at BetaRooms was hindered only by the fact that we couldn’t take them home afterwards. If we learned anything that weekend, its that the PlayStation move is not a competitor to the WiiMote. It surpasses it in every way.
