FirstPlay Thursday – Week 18

Submitted by on Thursday, 5 August 20103 Comments

FirstPlay has been with us for a few months now and it’s really starting to get into its stride, with great content appearing every week. But what can you find in this week’s episode?

There are no reviews again this week, but a number of decent previews make up for this, including Portal 2, which is locked firmly as one of our most anticipated games of next year. Not only that, but FirstPlay even travelled to Japan this week to see how the next PES game is looking.

There’s also several highlights in the screenshot galleries (which, remember, can be exported and used as XMB wallpapers), with hugely anticipated titles, such as thatgamecompany’s beautiful looking Journey, and Codemasters’ upcoming shooter Bodycount.

As always, this episode can be purchased for 99p, or you can save some money by taking out a 90-day subscription for £8.99.

Download size of Episode 18 = 1217MB

The complete contents of this week’s episode are as follows:

HD Reviews and Previews

2010 Preview – a look at the games you’ll be playing later this year

  • Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit – Shift was good, and this is looking great
  • Fallout: New Vegas – improves on Fallout 3 by keeping what worked and taking out what didn’t
  • Crysis 2 – apparently no-one told FirstPlay that it’s been pushed back to Q1 2011
  • Test Drive Unlimited 2 – wait, it’s set in Ibiza and Hawaii?… Sold!

Portal 2 preview – 2011?! But we want it NOW!!

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 preview – FirstPlay flies to Japan to see how PES 2011 is shaping up – as well as various other improvements, the game will feature a new power bar for passes (like FIFA 11)

Legion Blu-Ray review – the film’s fun B-movie antics are let down by hammy acting – 6/10

Network Highlights

PSN Preview – a look at what you’ll be downloading from the PlayStation Store later in the year

  • Trine 2 – a beautiful sequel to a beautiful game
  • PixelJunk Shooter 2 – the first full sequel of a PixelJunk title sees you trying to escape from the monster that swallowed you at the end of the first game
  • Dead Nation – sure, it’s another zombie game, but it just happens to come from the team behind the incredible Super Stardust HD

Best of PSN – a look at what you could be downloading right now

  • Death Track: Resurrection – it turns out this cross between Blur and Split/Second is actually quite good fun
  • Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype – just try not to die in this hectic side scrolling shmup – check out the PS3 Attitude review here
  • Tales of Monkey Island – simple, charming fun – check out the PS3 Attitude review here

ModNation Top Tracks – more user-generated tracks to make you depressed about your own (lack of) creative skills – check out the PS3 Attitude review here

Top Ten FIFA Goals – more impressive goals from FirstPlay viewers

Screenshot Galleries

Bodycount – almost everything in the game can be destroyed, so all cover is only temporary in this upcoming FPS from Codemasters

Journey – can it surpass Flower’s beautiful visuals and sense of freedom? If you don’t know the answer, then you clearly haven’t seen these screens

PlayStation Move – a quick look at some of the Move’s launch titles, featuring TV Superstars, echochrome ii, tumble, EyePet, Kung Fu Rider, Sports Champions and The Fight

True Crime: Hong Kong – the underrated True Crime series gets another chance thanks to ModNation Racers developer, United Front Games
