FirstPlay Thursday – Week 19

Submitted by on Thursday, 12 August 2010No Comment

FirstPlay has been with us for a few months now and it’s really starting to get into its stride, with great content appearing every week. But what can you find in this week’s episode?

There are no full game reviews (again) this episode, but instead you’ll find a Red Dead Redemption online review, and previews for Medal of Honor, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, and a selection of 2011’s biggest games.

Elsewhere, there’s a look at the latest content on the PlayStation Store, a round-up of the best movies available on the Video Store, and screenshot galleries for Gran Turismo 5, Call of Duty: Black Ops, F1 2010, and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

As always, this episode can be purchased for 99p, or you can save some money by taking out a 90-day subscription for £8.99.

Download size of Episode 19 = 1237MB

The complete contents of this week’s episode are as follows:

HD Reviews and Previews

Medal of Honor multiplayer preview – a solid start for the reboot, even if it looks a lot like MW2

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 preview – Starkiller goes rogue and is even more deadly (and mental) than he was in the first game

2011 preview – the games you’ll be playing next year (and are most likely gutted about not being able to play right now)

  • Bulletstorm – you’re just as likely to be killed by a plant as much as a human in this crazy futuristic shooter
  • Dead Space 2 – Isaac now has a voice in this bigger and better sequel
  • Mortal Kombat – this reboot of the classic fighting series promises the most bloodthirsty fatalities ever
  • inFamous 2 – Cole gets a new look, a new voice, and even a new personality in Sucker Punch’s superhero sequel

Up in the Air Blu-Ray review – one of the smartest comedies of recent years – 9/10

Network Highlights

Red Dead Redemption online review – not quite as good as the single player, but still extremely impressive – 9/10

Best of PSN – the latest content on the PlayStation Store

  • Landit Bandit – an enjoyable slice of madness
  • Puzzlegeddon – yet another decent block-matching puzzler
  • 4×4 Jam (minis) – good fun, and it even looks pretty good on PS3 (for a mini)
  • Helghast Assault and Helghast Scout (Lost Planet 2 skins) – a nice free download, exclusive for PS3 users
  • Heavy Rain Official Soundtrack – despite its atmosphere, this soundtrack to one of the year’s best games is great, even when separate from the game

Video Store Round-up – the best movies to download from the Video Store

  • Invictus – Morgan Freeman is a standout; Matt Damon isn’t
  • Merantau Warrior – a great martial arts film from Indonesia
  • Heartless – fresh and chilling, despite a disappointing ending
  • A Prophet – a terrifying and engaging modern classic

LBP Best Levels – distinguishing the good from the bad of LittleBigPlanet’s two million levels (these are all the former by the way)

Screenshot Galleries

Call of Duty: Black Ops – the tweaked Modern Warfare engine is working wonders with Black Ops’ lighting and textures

F1 2010 – could this be the Gran Turismo of F1 racing? It certainly looks that way

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier – experience the technology of tomorrow… today!

Gran Turismo 5 – it’s real life vs. Gran Turismo 5 (Gran Turismo wins)
