FirstPlay Thursday – Week 20

Submitted by on Thursday, 19 August 2010One Comment

FirstPlay has been with us for a few months now and it’s really starting to get into its stride, with great content appearing every week. But what can you find in this week’s episode?

We don’t know if the FirstPlay team read our article at the beginning of the week, but they certainly seem to have stepped it up in this episode. After having two weeks in a row with no game reviews, in this episode there are reviews for Mafia II, and the awesome PSN game DeathSpank, as well as a reviews round-up featuring Singularity, Everybody’s Tennis and, er, Naughty Bear.

Elsewhere, there’s an online review of Transformers: War for Cybertron, previews of Driver: San Francisco and Killzone 3, and screenshot galleries including Castlevania: Lords of the Shadow, Dirt 3, and some very special concept art of RAGE.

As always, this episode can be purchased for 99p, or you can save some money by taking out a 90-day subscription for £8.99.

The complete contents of this week’s episode are as follows:

HD Reviews and Previews

Mafia II review – has moments of brilliance, but it’s not consistent enough – 7/10

Reviews Round-up – want some more reviews? Of course you do!

  • Naughty Bear – repetitive and annoying – 5/10
  • Singularity – possibly the biggest surprise hit of the year – 8/10 – check out the PS3 Attitude review here
  • Everybody’s Tennis (PSP) – cute and enjoyable – 8/10

Driver: San Francisco preview – we doubt being in a real coma is this much fun

Killzone 3 preview – it somehow looks better than Killzone 2 (no, really!)

Network Highlights

DeathSpank review – genuinely funny and equally as fun – 8/10

Transformers: War for Cybertron online review – it turns out the online multiplayer is just as surprisingly good as the single player – 7/10

Minis Round-up – they didn’t sell a million copies for nothing

  • Hello Flowerz – a bit too cute (and boring)
  • Widget’s Odyssey – a short but fun platformer
  • Stellar Attack – fiddly and way too hard
  • Coconut Dodge – good fun, but a little repetitive
  • Rocks N’ Rockets – over a hundred levels make this FirstPlay’s pick of the week

Skate Tricks and Bails – all of these tricks are way beyond anything we could do – check out the PS3 Attitude review here

Screenshot Galleries

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – could be the best game in the series since the side-scrolling originals

Dirt 3 – Colin McRae’s name may have gone from the game, but his legacy remains

DJ Hero 2 – we hope the turntables are cheaper than they were last year

Dungeon Siege III – it’s a short gallery, but the game looks great

RAGE – this is another short gallery, but it’s made up of the concept art id used for their stand at E3… so basically they’re massive
