FirstPlay Thursday – Week 21

Submitted by on Thursday, 26 August 2010No Comment

FirstPlay has been with us for a few months now and it’s really starting to get into its stride, with great content appearing every week. But what can you find in this week’s episode?

This week there’s a review of Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days and some solid previews of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and a selection of PlayStation Move launch titles, but unfortunately this episode’s screenshot galleries are a little underwhelming.

There’s also a review of upcoming PSN game TNT Racers, a look at the recent DLC for Modern Warfare 2 and Bad Company 2 in the Shooter DLC Round-up, and an interesting feature about the sound design of the original Dead Space in Personal.

As always, this episode can be purchased for 99p, or you can save some money by taking out a 90-day subscription for £8.99.

Download size of Episode 21 = 1223MB

The complete contents of this week’s episode are as follows:

HD Reviews and Previews

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days – much better than the first one, but that isn’t really saying much – 6/10

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow preview – looks like it can stand with the best of PS3’s action games

PlayStation Move preview – a look at some of the Move’s launch titles – they’ll be more in next week’s episode

  • Tumble – the 1:1 tracking is particularly noticeable in this Jenga-like puzzler
  • Sports Champions – unrealistic, but at least it can handle backspin
  • The Shoot – this Time Crisis-inspired shooter shows how versatile the controller is
  • Heavy Rain: Move Edition – the Move makes the interactive drama of Heavy Rain even more interactive

Hot Tub Time Machine Blu-Ray review – funny in places, but it’s not really enough

Network Highlights

TNT Racers review – this upcoming top-down kart-racer is fantastic fun – 8/10

Shooter DLC Round-up – a look at the recent DLC for two of the PS3’s biggest shooters

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Resurgence Pack – expensive, but worth downloading for fans of COD’s online multiplayer
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 – Onslaught Mode – this 4-player survival co-op mode is tough-as-nails but very rewarding

Digital Comics – another look at the best Digital Comics on PSN

  • Superman-Batman #6 – Public Enemies #6 – just in case you didn’t know, the store now features DC Comics
  • Fables #5 – Legends in Exile #5 – one of the smartest comics on the market
  • Green Lantern – Rebirth #6 – Hal Jordan makes his return
  • Black Panther – Who is Black Panther? #5 – a reboot of the Marvel classic
  • Criminal – Issue #5 – a brilliant hard-boiled crime story

Personal: Dead Space – FirstPlay’s Adrian Ruiz-Langan explains why he thinks Dead Space’s sound design makes it PS3’s scariest game

Screenshot Galleries

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock – the setlist is strong, and the new quest mode looks good too

Operation Flashpoint: Red River – as with the previous game in the series, it’s one hit and you’re dead in this incredibly hardcore shooter

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine – if you like Warhammer, you’ll probably love this

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 – can the twelfth (yes, twelfth!) game in the series match the developer’s other fighting series?
