Golden Joystick short list revealed; reflects a good year for the PS3

Submitted by on Monday, 20 September 20105 Comments

With over a quarter of a million votes cast, the long list phase of voting in the 28th Annual Golden Joystick Awards is over.

Now the short lists have been revealed for the biggest gaming awards on the planet and they reinforce what a good year it has been for Sony’s system.

56 games playable on the system are up for awards including 9 which are PS3 console exclusives. But will any of them be receiving your vote?

For this year’s awards there will be 16 ‘Golden Joysticks’ up for grabs over 16 different categories, with 10 games shortlisted for each (with the exception of ‘Ultimate Game of The Year which has 20 potential winners).

That makes a fairly hefty 170 nominations – far too many for us to cover in-depth.

Instead we’ll discuss briefly which categories the PS3 has really shone in over the past year, with a full list of all of the PS3 nominations at the end of the article for your viewing pleasure. Sound good? Excellent. Let’s get started then!

First off the Action category, and what a great year for the PS3! The 3 exclusive titles nominated, Heavy Rain, God of War III and Uncharted 2, are not only brilliant games but are also a great example of the diversity that the PS3 now enjoys. Also worthy of mention here are the brilliant Assassin’s Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Red Dead Redemption. Picking a winner in this one could be tricky!

We'd vote for God of War III if we were you. Does this man look like a gracious runner-up?

Next up (we’ll do this alphabetically for ease) is the category for downloadable titles.

A strange mix here, with the Bonfire of the Vanities DLC for Assassin’s Creed 2 going up against Battlefield 1943 and LittleBigPlanet. Still there is something for everyone and it is great to see that LittleBigPlanet is still getting the attention it rightly deserves.

7 fighting games on the system are vying to be Fighting Game of The Year, although personally we can only see one winner in Super Street Fighter IV. We’d have to give an honourable mention to UFC 2009 Undisputed though, and not just because we’re scared of what the burly men might do to us if we didn’t.

Onto Music Game of The Year now, which is an almost entirely unremarkable affair.

8 titles for the PS3 feature but only 2 of them don’t have the word ‘Hero’ in the title, and even then it’s only because they have the words ‘Rock Band’ instead. Stagnation of the genre aside, The Beatles: Rock Band was a one-band music game done right and it will be a travesty if it doesn’t win – you heard it here first.

Skipping on to Puzzle Game of The Year and our sole entrant is the PS3-exclusive Katamari Forever. Slated by critics for being too derivative of previous titles, we’re pleasantly surprised to see such a niché title doing so well – some of you must have liked it!

6 PS3 titles including 2 exclusives made the grade in the Racing genre with WipeOut HD Fury and, a personal favourite of ours, ModNation Racers getting the nod from gamers. Meanwhile in the RPG category the very enjoyable PS3 exclusive 3D Dot Game Heroes looks a somewhat awkward bedfellow next to the equally brilliant, but drastically different, Final Fantasy XIII.

In the category for best shooter it is a real head-to-head of the AAA titles, with Modern Warfare 2 coming up against Battlefield Bad Company 2. The PS3 titles are rounded out by BioShock 2, Aliens vs Predator, and Borderlands – truly something for every type of FPS fan on the console last year.

Soundtrack of the year is next, with Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, Assassin’s Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 all making their second appearances. GTA IV: Episodes From Liberty City is also in contention, making this category another really tough one to call.

Uncharted 2 had a soundtrack to match its stunning visuals

Sports Game Of the Year somewhat predictably sees 3 football games including the brilliant FIFA 10 making up the majority of the 5 PS3 nominated games, but Skate 3 and Madden 10 also pop up to give some variety to sports fans.

In fact perhaps the only disappointing note in the nominations is the conspicuous lack of any PS3 titles nominated for the ‘Best Strategy’ or ‘Best Online’ categories, which once again highlights the console’s relative weakness in these areas.

The latter of these may well be addressed by next year though, with the PS3 exclusive online title Final Fantasy XIV picking up a nod in the ‘One to Watch’ category for most anticipated games.

Also in contention for the ‘One to Watch’ are the eagerly anticipated Dead Space 2 and Crysis 2, not to mention Call of Duty: Black Ops. Indeed there is plenty to look forward to for PS3 gamers in amongst the 9 titles in contention, although we have to admit to being confused by Mafia 2’s continued inclusion.

Finally we come to the ‘Ultimate Game of The Year’.

11 of the 20 nominees can be played on Sony’s system; 3 of which are exclusive and all of which are fantastic (for the sake of comparison the 360 also has 3 exclusives and 11 games total in the final 20, whereas the Wii has just 1 solitary representative).

The real triumph for the PS3 is that this category includes a third nomination for both Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2, putting them on-par with multi-platform blockbusters Assassin’s Creed 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. For a non-conventional game like Heavy Rain especially this is quite the achievement.

Of the 11 titles, we here at Attitude Towers are split over which should win. We just can’t agree. That said, we’re unanimous in thinking that it’ll be somewhat confusing and pointless if Fallout 3: Game of the Year wins Game of the Year. ‘GotYGotY’ just doesn’t have a good ring to it at all.

You can vote for your favourites here, and if you do we’d love to know how you voted in the comments below!

All things considered, it is probably fortunate that the winners are decided by a popular vote and not by a fight to the death...
