FirstPlay Thursday – Week 27

Submitted by on Thursday, 7 October 20102 Comments

Lucy Porter is back from her holiday in what almost feels like a bumper episode of FirstPlay. For a start, there’s a record amount of reviewed games this week, including the epic Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and equally awesome Enslaved: Odyssey to West, as well as PSN titles Blade Kitten and Flight Control HD.

They’re joined by (believe it or not) even more reviews, screenshot galleries of Killzone 3, MotorStorm: Apocalypse and Portal 2 (WANT!), a round-up of the latest and greatest minis, and a couple of pretty cool themes to brighten up your XMB. Keep it up FirstPlay!

As always, this episode can be purchased for 99p, or you can save some money by taking out a 90-day subscription for £8.99.

Download size of Episode 27 = 1279MB

The complete contents of this week’s episode are as follows:

HD Reviews and Previews

Castlevania: Lord of Shadow review – incredible graphics and gameplay make for one of the best games of the year – 9/10

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West review – not quite as good as Uncharted 2, but it isn’t far off – 8/10

Quantum Theory review – pretty terrible really – 3/10

Reviews Round-up – even more reviews crammed in at the last minute

  • Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. 2 – good looks aside, it’s just not really interesting enough – 6/10
  • R.U.S.E. – an intuitive yet far from perfect RTS – 7/10
  • Madden NFL 11 – arguably the best of the franchise – 8/10

Network Highlights

Blade Kitten review – great art style and graphics, but pretty unoriginal gameplay – 6/10

Flight Control HD review – fantastically addictive fun, especially with the PS Move – 8/10

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days online review – there’s some original ideas here, but the game types are too repetitive – 7/10

minis Round-up – a look at the PSP’s best time sinks

  • Fort Commander: King’s Gambit – a basic but decent tower defence game
  • Fish Tank – an enjoyable match-4 puzzler
  • Widget’s Odyssey 2 – poor controls hamper what is otherwise a pretty good game
  • Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter – is this the first minis FPS? We think it might well be
  • Arctic Adventures: Polar’s Puzzles – arguably one of the most polished minis titles

Screenshot Galleries

Inversion – manipulate gravity in this intriguing third-person-shooter

Killzone 3 – a look at the multiplayer of Guerrilla’s awesome-looking sequel

MotorStorm: Apocalypse – has Split/Second already met its match?

Portal 2 – February really can’t come soon enough!
