Get your RAGE on

Take a trip if you will to the Wasteland. A post-apocalyptic world characterized by lawlessness and abject violence. As gamers this is familiar world to an extent.

What we haven’t seen is id Software’s take on the idea. The word ‘famed’ hardly seems to encapsulate the studio that created the first-person shooter. Derivative isn’t exactly their style. Check out their newest trailer and screenshots.

For those unfamiliar with the game’s story here’s a quick outline: Following the strike of Apophis 99942 80% of all life on Earth is gone. The remnants of the blast have left the worlds landscapes blanketed in darkness. Man, in his infinite wisdom created ‘Arks’ in anticipation of such an attack to preserve the human race and provide the tools to start over. When the inhabitants of the Arks emerge they find that many of the humans thought to be wiped out by the blast have instead mutated and formed a tyrannical government. This government has designs on you. Diplomacy is not an option my friends (still waiting for that diplomacy simulator).

RAGE represents the first new IP for id in a decade. They hope to give each area in the game a different feel by utilizing their Tech 5 textural system. As you can see from the trailer the settings really pop.

Let’s recount what this game has going for it. One of the most celebrated developers in the business, working with a new engine, fostering a new venture that gives them more creative leeway.

As gamers, there isn’t much not to love here. There are many of us that have grown tired of the FPS genre but when id issues a new IP there is a considerable prospect for innovation within said genre.

Take a peek at the shots below and let us know what you think.

Note: for those curious the song featured in the trailer is ‘Burning Jacob’s Ladder’ by Mark Lanegan.
