When Activision announced Prototype 2, they revealed a new protagonist that we’d be playing as, James Heller. Ever since then, fans have been wondering what happened to Alex Mercer, the man we spent hours powering up in the original Prototype?

Activision has released a new video revealing why they decided to change Alex into the villain for Prototype 2 and also shows a brief look at some pre-alpha gameplay.

As it turns out, Heller has lost his whole family to the virus. Alex being the cause of all this, Heller has developed a deep hatred towards him. Once he gains his newfound powers, he sets out to take down Alex, his maker. As the developers put it, it’s your David versus Goliath storyline.

So far we like the idea of reversing the roles and getting to experience Prototype 2 with a new character and witness Alex, our “hero”, from the other side of the spectrum. Even in its pre-alpha stage, the game is looking pretty impressive. 2012 can’t get here soon enough.
