Awesomenauts is awesomely old at heart
Dutch development studio Romino has announced its latest game: Awesomenauts. One which is intended to remind gamers of the 16-bit glory days of the 1980′s. If you weren’t alive in the 80′s just think of it as an opportunity to take a ride in a very limited time machine.
You may know Romino from their previous games. They’ve only got two under their belt but it’s a strong pair (technically one). Last year PS3 owners finally got a crack at the lauded Swords & Soldiers, a side-scrolling real-time-strategy adventure that found its way through not to be utterly confounding. In addition to the success the team had with Swords & Soldiers, Romino is made up of the team behind the original de Blob.
Awesomenauts is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game inspired by the classic animated series of the 1980′s. For stateside readers that means plenty of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, He-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Duck Tales was observed for research purposes. What a great job.
“We are thrilled to surprise the world with Awesomenauts at E3, and look forward to announcing further details then. If MOBA games and classic animated series were to have a baby, this would be it! They don’t make ‘em like this anymore!” - Jasper Koning, co-founder of Ronimo Games
The game’s mission is to combine the classic platforming style gameplay of the past with modern online multiplayer technology.
Awesomenauts is scheduled to be on display at this year’s E3. Look for more information as it becomes available. Hopefully we can at least get a trailer.
What do you think of Awesomenauts and what is your favorite animated series?
