Now that online gaming has largely been restored to the PS3, users have the chance to make up for lost time by earning double XP this weekend for two of the most popular first-person shooters.

Two of the most celebrated titles in the PlayStation 3 library: Killzone 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops are currently hosting impromptu double-experience weekends to boost online matches post-blackout.

The Killzone franchise, which is additionally offering the PSP title Killzone Liberation for free download as part of the Welcome Back initiative, began their special on Friday May 20 and it is scheduled to conclude Monday May 23 at 10:00 A.M. UK time. As an aside the developers mentioned that during the double-XP weekend the score screen will read ‘Fast Starter Bonus’ instead of ‘Bonus Points’ due to an error which will be corrected in the future.

Out of special consideration for PlayStation gamers the Call of Duty: Black Ops double-XP event is exclusive to the PS3.  Like Killzone 3 it began on Friday but instead of concluding on Monday Black Ops players can enjoy the hastened XP harvesting until Tuesday May 24 at 3:00 P.M. UK time.

For an added XP sink a special playlist heavily featuring the ‘Nuketown’ map has been added to take full advantage of the high kill counts associated with the map as well as the double-experience event in general.

If you’ve been chomping at the bit for a chance to get back online with either of these games there’s no time like the present.
