Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launch is the most successful of all-time

Submitted by on Sunday, 13 November 20113 Comments

The astronomically successful Call of Duty franchise outdid itself once again with the release of Modern Warfare 3, posting day-one sales figures eclipsing any and all entertainment releases that came before it.

For the third consecutive year the Call of Duty franchise shattered the sales records for previous Call of Duty titles; a feat that had never been accomplished in any medium.

In 24 hours, Modern Warfare 3 sold an estimated 6.5 million units in North America and the UK alone. Calculations from independent sources had day-one sales at more than $400 million, comfortably surpassing the $360 million and $310 million day-one sales numbers achieved by Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 respectively.

“We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories. Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row.  Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings,” two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.” –  Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc.

Given the incredible commercial success of the franchise, it’s fair to say that sales figures of this magnitude are to be expected at this point. However, putting the likes of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings in your rear-view mirror certainly puts the brand in rarefied air.

How many of you stood in line for the midnight launch?
