Assassin’s Creed III Reveal Trailer & Screens
The setting of the next Assassin’s Creed game has been revealed along with the game’s first trailer and batch of screenshots. Here’s what we know about the game including some insight from the development team’s Creative Director.
Given the recent history of Ubisoft’s handling of the Assassin’s Creed franchise we had a good feeling that we were due for the next iteration of the battle between the Assassins and Templars later this year. However with Altair and Ezio’s story concluding with Assassin’s Creed Revelations all bets were off as to the future direction of the series. With the release of the trailer above and screenshots which can be seen below we’ve received answer to some of our questions while spawning new ones altogether. The animus is taking us to the wilds of the American Northeast in 1777, at the heart of the American Revolution.
Assassin’s Creed 3 which has been in development for over 2 years at present date is scheduled for a October 30th release in the U.S. and an October 31st release in the U.K.
Our hero, known as Connor, is a descendant of an English father and a Native American mother raised in the Mohawk Valley featured at the outset of the trailer. His motivations for battling the British forces remain a mystery but he appears to be working with the American forces in some capacity according to the screenshots.
Representing a strong move away from the building-scaling proclivities of previous Assassin’s Creed titles is the setting of Assassin’s Creed 3 which is predicated on heavily wooded areas. The game’ creative director Alex Hutchinson discussed this very point with GameInformer:
“There are many games with forests, but the forests are just collections of assets. They’re just trees and you walk around them. If we can make trees and the wilderness as much a playground as Altair and Ezio made cities, then its huge.” – Alex Hutchinson, Creative Director for Assassin’s Creed 3, via GI.
Furthermore Alex shed some light on his philosophy going into Assassin’s Creed 3 and how he intended to alter the franchise with the latest game.
“I wanted to get away from the very linear nature of going from mission to mission that was in the previous game. The notion of player opportunities and letting people structure their own experience is something I really wanted to work on. I think we can make a much better fight [mechanics] so we’ve been ripping that apart and rebuilding it from the ground up. Those two things are the two big chunks that I wanted to do.” – Alex Hutchinson.
Assassin’s Creed 3 will no doubt be a departure from the exploits of Altair and Ezio invariably breathing, for better or worse, new life into the franchise.
