Max Payne 3 – dissecting ‘bullet time’
Few franchises are synonymous with a single gameplay mechanic the way that Max Payne is with ‘bullet time’. The tortured former NYPD officer has been evading and plugging ne’er-do-wells thanks to the subdued effects of father time since his PS2 debut.
With Max Payne 3’s mid-May debut fast approaching, Rockstar Games would like to give a look at the continued evolution of ‘bullet time’.
For the run-up before Max Payne 3’s release Rockstar is giving fans an in-depth, DVD extras style look at the finer points of the game. Much like what we saw in the months before L.A. Noire.
Utilizing ‘bullet time’ is without a doubt the most valuable tactic players will use when Max Payne takes his talents to Sao Paulo on May 15th/18th (US/UK). Rockstar Studios is making no secret about the mechanic’s importance in terms of Max Payne 3’s presentation in addition to its more obvious gameplay applications.
Gamers will have the opportunity to manipulate time through final kill cameras which highlight the final kill of each confrontation. Multiple variables (distance, weapon, point of impact, etc.) combine to grant unique kill cams which can then be sped up and slowed down at the discretion of players making for some very dramatic shootouts.
