Nasne – Sony to launch networked recorder and media storage device in Japan

Submitted by on Tuesday, 17 April 20123 Comments

Sony today announced plans to launch a new networked recorder and media storage device in Japan called “nasne”.

The little black box is set become the centre of the living room, offering cross device connectivity with compatible Sony products such as your PS3, PS Vita, VAIO PC, Sony Tablet and Xperia smartphone.

Nasne is available in Japan from 19 July and will retail for about 16,980 yen.

The little black box comes with 500 GB in-built storage as well as digital terrestrial and satellite broadcasting tuners. It allows users to watch and record programs on their PS3 using Torne or with “VAIO TV with nasne” for VAIO and then access recorded content from supported devices, such as PS Vita, Sony Tablet and Sony Experia phone. Nasne is also capable of streaming live broadcasts simultaneously onto two supported devices.

The device can also act as a storage solution in the house, capable of streaming movies, photos and music to any DLNA compatible device.

“We are offering a seamless and unique Sony experience through ‘nasne,’ which serves as a home entertainment hub that connects to Sony’s various network products,” said Kazuo Hirai, Representative Corporate Executive Officer, President and CEO of Sony Corporation and Chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “‘nasne’ will give users more freedom to enjoy television in new ways by enabling them to watch programs on various Sony products through dedicated applications. We will continue to offer attractive products and services that inspire customers around the world and spark their curiosity, by further enhancing collaboration within Sony groups.”

A dedicated app is necessary to stream content with PS Vita called Torne for PS Vita. This is expected this calendar year. Compatible Xperia phones are also to be announced for this year.

Nasne has only been confirmed for Japan, but it seems reasonable to expect a release in other territories considering Play TV made it to the UK as well as Sony’s continued desire to connect its various hardware arms.
