[UPDATE] Pure Chess calls “checkmate” in the US on 29 May
Developing the first ever chess game on PlayStation 3 and Vita can be a challenge. Fortunately, buying the first ever chess game will be much easier in the US, when Pure Chess hits the PlayStation Store on 29 May.
PS3 Attitude previously reviewed the UK version of Pure Chess for PS3 released back on 11 April, 2012. The PS Vita version saw its UK debut one week later. Developer VooFoo Studios is not likely to change much for the US launch, but will release both the PS3 and PS Vita versions together on 29 May, coinciding with the FIDE World Class Championship match in Russia.
The UK version of Pure Chess featured the same aesthetics as VooFoo Studios amazing stint into the game of billiards called Hustle Kings. Simple yet elegant backgrounds and game pieces, all presented in stunning high definition 1080p with stereoscopic 3D support for the PS3.
The most exciting mode is Play by Mail, a turned-based multiplayer mode utilizing the PSN messaging system. Given how lengthy a good game of chess can be, its understandable why the developers would not include a full online multiplayer mode.
We have contacted Ripstone, the publisher behind Pure Chess, in an effort to obtain more information on pricing, cross purchase and any game changes between what we’ve played in the UK and what will be released in the US. We will update this space if more information is revealed.
