20 minutes of Dead Space 3 gameplay

Submitted by on Sunday, 17 June 2012No Comment

EA’s 2012 E3 showcase was amassed around new iterations of publisher’s biggest and most successful franchises. From relatively new (Crysis 3) to unfrozen from carbonite (SimCity), Electronic Arts CEO, John Riccitiello made it abundantly clear that the publishing giant would indeed focus on strengthening an already proven stable of franchises. Among EA’s prized assets is Dead Space and the forthcoming Dead Space 3.

What wasn’t shown at E3 however was this rather large chunk of Dead Space 3 footage which serves as the first real close-up we’ve seen of the third installment in the survival/horror series. Steve Papoutsis, vice president and general manager of Visceral Games would like to take you on a tour of some of the new aspects you can expect when Dead Space 3 makes its way to store shelves. Including the polarizing addition of 2-player drop-in/drop-out cooperative play.

To the surprise of practically no one, it seems Issac Clarke once again finds himself in a hostile environment teeming with ruthless abominations. His only recourse being a rash of large-scale, impromptu amputations in the name of survival.

Fans of the series will find comfort in the familiar pacing and arrhythmia-inducing jolts that Dead Space has become known for. What has many worried is the perceived deterioration of Issac’s survival/horror roots in favor of wider appealing action sensibilities à la Resident Evil.

“With drop-in/drop-out co-op you’re able to team up and take down the terror together, with a friend. Now, I want to be really clear about one thing. The people that really enjoy that single-player Dead Space game that they’ve came to love and enjoy, that’s going to remain the same” – Papoutsis.

It’s hard not to get excited when you see the new territories Visceral Games is placing Issac in but the inclusion of co-op will definitely plant the seeds of doubt in the minds of those who saw the addition multiplayer in Dead Space 2 as a harbinger of things to come. The question becomes is it possible to experience the unique terror of Dead Space with a friend by your side?
