E3 12; Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 debut trailer, details and screenshots

Submitted by on Sunday, 3 June 2012No Comment

Castlevania was one of my highlights of 2010. It was a fantastic reboot of the series, offering an engrossing story, great voice acting and brilliant combat. So naturally the reveal of Lords of Shadow 2 has me bounding about with joy.

Note: spoilers ahead for those who haven’t finished Lords of Shadow 1.

The game will conclude the saga, following on from Dracula’s origin story in Lords of Shadow 1:

“In Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, the origin of Dracula and his legendary connection with the Belmonts was revealed. In Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, fans can expect thrilling new twists and challenges. In this shocking conclusion to the Lords of Shadow saga, Dracula returns once again, weakened and yearning for release from his immortal bonds. Facing a new and powerful threat, the vampire lord must reacquire his old powers – and only his castle holds the key. However, the famed Belmont clan also seek his ultimate destruction.”

In the debut trailer, we see Dracula (still voiced by Robert Carlyle) locked up in his castle before being disturbed by an army of knights and a giant mechanical creature. Clearly he’s gained a few more powers since the last game – most noticeably a shapeshifting ability – because he absolutely massacres the army.

But the teaser raises several questions, such as: Does Gabriel have any good left in him? Who is this mysterious new character – another Belmont? How many years will this game cover? The post-credits sequence in Lords of Shadow 1 showed Gabriel and Zobek  in a contemporary setting. This trailer clearly shows a medieval world, so if it is to conclude the sage, it may need to span several centuries.

We’ll no doubt find out more during Konami’s press conference at E3.
