GTA 3 and War of the Monsters PS2 classics coming to NA PS3s

ESRB ratings were reported about a month ago for Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City Stories for PS3 delivery. Now, the US PlayStation Blogcast crew has confirmed at least that GTA 3 is coming next Tuesday.

They also confirmed War of the Monsters will be downloadable when the Tuesday, 31 July update hits the NA PlayStation Store. Get ready to make a tough decision.

Grand Theft Auto 3 is arguably the sandbox game that set the standard for all sandbox games that followed. It had an incredibly engaging story, a brilliant 3D world, and timeless voice acting. GTA 3 remains atop the highest rated PlayStation 2 games of all time, with Metacritic allowing only Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 to enjoy the view with the same score of 97 out of 100.

War of the Monsters is a venerable monster bashing first party force to be reckoned with. It contains 10 monsters to fight as within destructible cities filled with all sorts of environmental hazards. According to GameFAQs, the UK version featured an unlockable hidden character: Mecha Sweet Tooth.

The game may look like a simply Godzilla clone, but rest assured that War of the Monsters is a masterful 4-player monster brawler with combos and special moves. A stamina bar keeps the fighting competitive and fluid; button mashing does not go unpunished.

Keep a weathered eye on this Tuesday’s North American PlayStation Store update, as PS2 classics aren’t the only worthy mentionable expected this week. Plan for a $15 pre-order of Sound Shapes for PS3 and PS Vita in one purchase.
