PS3A PlayTime – week of 22 October, 2012

Submitted by on Monday, 29 October 2012No Comment

Come join us once a week where we prove that our spare time isn’t entirely consumed by pounding away at a keyboard, but also by mashing the buttons of our DualShock 3s and Vitas. What games have we been playing? What cool adventures have we been on? It’s PlayTime!

Halloween is fast approaching and the Giants have won the World Series. While life around us moves forward we can stop for a second to take a look back a week and see what everyone’s been doing.

Does this season give us the urge to play scary games? Its fascinating to think that it does, given the theory that Halloween is a holiday redesigned by the big candy industry. Stef examines the possibilities of our psyche by challenging all with a twisted list of scary games.

This week was especially exciting to the team thanks in part to a Zen Pinball 2 challenge. The Spider-man table was the target to our obsession this week, and its possible that a week’s worth of hours were wasted trying to trump the top scores.

For now, let’s take a look at the posts of the past seven days:

The Unfinished Swan: The PS3 Attitude Review

The Walking Dead coming to GameStop as exclusive Collector’s Edition

What I’m playing: I’ve been playing a bit of Zen Pinball 2 on the Vita thanks to a challenge laid down by the rest of the team. We’re competing to see who can get the best score on the Spider-man table, and I’m struggling to get over 52m right now. Other than that, I’ve enjoyed a bit of Tokyo Jungle on the PS3 – I’m doing much better now that I’ve got the ‘Aibo-alike’ robot dog. He’s predictably much more bad-ass than a tiny Pomeranian.

Accomplishments: Tokyo Jungle is a simple game, but always includes enough memorable moments to keep it fresh. My most memorable this week has been indelibly inked on my brain. On going after a full-sized dairy cow with my robot dog, it was pretty clear that I had fully entered the bovine from the rear in my attempt to bring it to its knees. Flashbacks of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ (a UK TV show from the 80s about a local vet) were instant and (probably) as vivid as those Vietnam veterans still get when a helicopter flies overhead. I haven’t woken up at 2am in a cold sweat yet, but those nights can’t be far off…

What I’m watching and reading: I’ve been travelling a lot this week so haven’t had much chance to watch anything, but did quickly catch episodes 1 & 2 of Continuum to see if it ‘has legs’. Something that cow, sadly, cannot lay claim to.

What I’m playing: Zen Pinball 2, Super Monkey Ball, Treasure Park.

Accomplishments: After an awesome 40m+ score on Zen Pinball’s Spider-Man table, I had great fun watching Team Attitude struggle to match it. I thought I had them but Zen master Majiesto did it yesterday. 161.99m! He must’ve cheated.

What I’m watching and reading: Toquiwa are my new favourite band from Japan. Their live performance was one massive explosion of joy.

What I’m playing: Didn’t have time to play many games last week save for one, Zen Pinball 2 on my Vita.

Accomplishments: Sean challenged Team Attitude in the Spider-Man table for ZP2 with a score around 40.3m. While good, I knew I could top that. Had no idea I would be able to get almost 162m, though! I have a feeling that score will stand for a long time.

What I’m watching and reading: Saw “Cloud Atlas” by The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. Fantastic film! It’s a shame it hasn’t done that well at the box office so far.

What I’m playing: Final Fantasy XIII, LittleBigPlanet PS Vita, Rock Band Blitz.

Accomplishments:  I only realised how annoyed I am about the new SingStar icon on the XMB when I started talking about it with the rest of Team Attitude. Why is the icon so big? Why can’t I delete it? Why has Sony pushed aside their core audience in favour of the casual market? I have kind of got used to it now though, so whatevs.

What I’m watching and reading: The fact that I still haven’t seen Skyfall yet is pretty disappointing, although I hope to remedy that very soon.

What I’m playing: A whole lot of Street Fighter X Tekken on Vita, Zen Pinball 2, Plants vs Zombies Vita.

Accomplishments: I was the original high scorer on the Spider-man table before Sean, Matt, and Dolph had to go and ruin everything. I’ve played PvZ on Android, PS3, and now Vita. Gotten the furthest in this Vita version than any of the others. After I downloaded SFXT for Vita, I didn’t stop playing it. I’ve now achieved all the non-grinding trophies. Now its time to grind, BUT…I’m picking up Assassin’s Creed III Liberation tonight and downloading Need For Speed Most Wanted the second its available for Vita after tomorrow’s NA PlayStation Store Refresh! #birthdaymoneyallgone

What I’m watching and reading: Got caught up to date with all episodes of Castle, started watching the new season of Bones, and started watching Sons of Anarchy. Why didn’t I watch this sooner!? Its almost like there are real biker gangs in my state of California!

What I’m playing: Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Not had much time this week between work and being ill!

Accomplishments: I find it funny that if you play a video game with a busty woman featured, you get your complimentary model viewer gallery where you can rotate and zoom in the camera. Lookin’ at you, Black Cat!

What I’m watching and reading: Finished reading Deus Ex: The Icarus Effect which was brilliant, been watching The Big Bang Theory, Rules of Engagement, How I Met your Mother and the first 3 Harry Potter movies.
