SingStar going free-to-play? More info next week

Submitted by on Monday, 15 October 2012No Comment

Spotted by the eagle-eyed staff at PSN Stores, the SingStar Viewer app has been discontinued. The app, designed to allow users to browse and purchase songs and view uploaded videos, has been discontinued by Sony. Now why would they do that?

Now before you raise your pitchforks and head down to Sony HQ, take some comfort from the message that appears when you load the app.

The statement clearly states that the “complete SingStar experience” will be available as a free download very soon, suggesting SingStar is about to go free-to-play.

When asked about the update, the official SingStar Twitter account said to expect an announcement next week.

Mike Rose, Gamasutra’s UK editor, also took to Twitter to mention that he has been booked in for an interview with Sony later this week.

That SingStar could go free-to-play isn’t a surprise. What is a surprise is that it hasn’t happened before now.

As Sony gears up for the PS3’s most family friendly Christmas, a free-to-play SingStar will sit perfectly next to Wonderbook,┬áPlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and LittleBigPlanet Karting.
