PS3A PlayTime – week of 29 October, 2012

Submitted by on Tuesday, 6 November 2012No Comment

playtime PS3A PlayTime week of 29 October, 2012Come join us once a week where we prove that our spare time isn’t entirely consumed by pounding away at a keyboard, but also by mashing the buttons of our DualShock 3s and Vitas. What games have we been playing? What cool adventures have we been on? It’s PlayTime!

Last week, some amazing games were released and we’ve been playing several of them. Need For Speed Most Wanted, Assassin’s Creed III, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, and more have graced our fingerprint-laden screens and controllers.

The holidays are officially here. It’s that time of year where we think about what we want even though we don’t need it. Or if you’re really good, you think about the things you do need and never mind what you might want. And video games are a hot topic for holiday gift givers. They’re affordable, but not cheap.

Much of what we’ve been writing would make for some great holiday gifts. Amazon now offerings PlayStation Network gift cards, and will email the voucher code immediately after the purchase is complete. You don’t even need to ask what games we want, just email us voucher codes!

Let’s take a look at the posts of the past seven days:

What I’m playing: I’ve been playing Zen Pinball 2 on the Vita and PS3 all week, mostly due to an internal competition we’re having on the Spider-man table. I still can’t do better than 95m on the table, and I need to beat Majiesto on 161m.

Accomplishments: Since I can’t beat Majiesto on the one table, I decided I needed to beat his Pro Score and own the No. 1 slot on as many tables as possible. I now have the No. 1 spot on 10 tables, and I’ve passed Majiesto to the No. 1 Pro Score on the PS3 Attitude team. One day, I’ll beat his Spider-man score, but until then I’m happy to be No. 1 overall.

What I’m watching and reading: I started watching Hunted starring Melissa George and got immediately hooked. That one’s a keeper… I also finally saw Prometheus. I don’t think it is Ridley Scott’s best work, but I was generally impressed and thought the writers did an excellent job of tying the story to the Alien mythos. I have a few issues with some of the details and how they don’t connect properly, and as an Asimov fan I’m having a hard time understanding David’s motivations. Hard to please, us fans.

What I’m playing: Was able to get some decent gaming in this week. Played Zen Pinball 2, Resident Evil 6, and Uncharted 3 (which coincidently celebrated its first birthday last Thursday).

Accomplishments: Knocked some of these titles off my massive backlog of games. Finished the entire campaign for RE6 and finally was able to beat Uncharted 3. Now, onto Assassin’s Creed II. Yes, I said II.

What I’m watching and reading: Saw “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Skyfall.” Both are excellent movies. One’s got all the action and the other one has videogames!

What I’m playing: Assassin’s Creed III, Dead or Alive 5, Final Fantasy XIII, loads of PS Vita games (see below!)

Accomplishments: It turns out that PS Vita games really are like buses – you wait several months for one and then about a million turn up at once. It began with LittleBigPlanet in September, and since then Vita users have been treated to Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, Smart As…, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz, and more, all of which means I’ve spent more money than I probably should have done recently!

What I’m watching and reading: Finally saw Skyfall, and I implore everyone who hasn’t already done so to do the same. It’s not quite the best Bond ever (Casino Royale still has the edge for me), but it’s still an expertly crafted piece of cinema.

What I’m playing: Assassin’s Creed II, LEGO Batman 2: DC Superheroes (Vita), Need For Speed Most Wanted (Vita), Assassin’s Creed III Liberation (Vita), The Pinball Arcade Party Monsters table and No Good Gofers, and The Unfinished Swan.

Accomplishments: I’m now trying desperately to find the time to complete Assassin’s Creed II and LEGO Batman 2. Over 80% trophies in ACII. But LEGO Batman threw me a curveball with a nasty bug preventing me from unlocking the Starter Pack trophy. I unlocked all the characters, but for some reason it is saying I didn’t unlock Nightwing, and I did! So I’ll have to replay a bit of it to get the final trophy and obtain that uber illustrious platinum. NFS and Assassin’s Creed III on Vita are a lot of fun, especially Most Wanted. More on that next week.

What I’m watching and reading: I’ll have you know I bought a ticket to see Skyfall at the IMAX theater in the Metreon in San Francisco with a group of friends. I expect it to be an awesome showing. At home, I’ve been catching up on season 2 of The Walking Dead on Netflix and revisited some old Louis C.K. stand-up. I would really like to see that guys on stage! Come back to SF! Please!
