Dead Island: Riptide Zombie Bait edition revealed

Submitted by on Tuesday, 15 January 2013No Comment

Riptide-12Publisher Deep Silver, developers of the upcoming Dead Island: Riptide, has revealed the collector’s edition for the UK and Australia exclusive dubbed the ‘Zombie Bait’ edition.

This has brought on a lot of backlash due to a bust of a mutilated, severed woman’s torso, giant breasts intact, which is included in this controversial edition, seen as tasteless by many.

The backlash has been brought on by the apparent sex appeal of the bust as, even though the body itself is disturbing, it’s clear that the breasts have been made large and left intact with minimal bloodstains in an attempt to sexualise it. Deep Silver has referred to this bust as “a striking conversation piece”.

The ‘Zombie Bait’ edition can be seen below:

As detailed above, the ‘Zombie Bait’ edition includes the following:

  • A 31cm tall, 18.5cm wide hand painted bust
  • A steelbook case
  • Weapon Pack DLC
  • Artwork
  • The game itself

Deep Silver are aware of the reaction and have issued an apology on their Twitter page:

A statement on the Zombie Bait Edition:

We deeply apologize for any offense caused by the Dead Island Riptide “Zombie Bait Edition”, the collector’s edition announced for Europe and Australia. Like many gaming companies, Deep Silver has many offices in different countries, which is why sometimes different versions of Collector’s Editions come into being for North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

For the limited run of the Zombie Bait Edition for Europe and Australia, a decision was made to include a gruesome statue of a zombie torso, which was cut up like many of our fans had done to the undead enemies in the original Dead Island.

We sincerely regret this choice. We are collecting feedback continuously from the Dead Island community, as well as the international gaming community at large, for ongoing internal meetings with Deep Silver’s entire international team today. For now, we want to reiterate to the community, fans and industry how deeply sorry we are, and that we are committed to making sure this will never happen again.

Do you think that the backlash is justified or do you think that the bust is harmless, good fun? Let us know in the usual place below.
